VCE Biology Excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo

Recently, Unit 3 and 4 VCE Biology students from both the Maddingley and the Woodlea campus participated in a fun filled excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo as part of their studies of the immune system and DNA manipulation techniques.

The visit centred on a biological case study investigating Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV), a disease that affects both wild and captive elephant populations. Through the experience, students examined how organisms defend themselves against pathogens and explored the role of different scientific techniques in disease diagnosis and monitoring.

Students also learned how Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used to detect viral DNA and monitor disease outbreaks. They also explored different forms of immunity, the use of vaccination, and strategies used to control the spread of infectious diseases in relation to the EEHV presence elephant populations.

In addition to the case study, students collected and analysed information from exhibits throughout the zoo, applying observation and data analysis skills relevant to their VCE Biology coursework.
