Professor Sabeena Jameel is like no one I have ever met before. I had the privilege of spending some time with her a few weeks ago after an inspiring lecture she presented regarding “Love as the ultimate virtue.” Professor Jameel is Head of the Medical School at the University of Birmingham, still practices medicine one day a week in Birmingham’s poorest suburb and has recently completed a thesis on Character Virtues, and more specifically love. Interestingly, however, modern day society rarely looks at love with the virtuous lens. Apologies to those of you who have a strong non-secular background as you are the exception. Love is deemed within modern day society as an emotion only and the word love has more recently been demonised within education circles. However, education really is about the virtue of Love.
The Italian priest and philosopher Thomas Aquinas suggested that love can be both a passion and a virtue and I think that we should learn from this thought if we truly are to make a difference in education. In the modern world, we tend to think of love only as an emotion, something we “fall into,” something that “happens to us.” There is certainly love of this sort, love that we “feel” and sometimes feel very strongly. But it’s important to realise that this is not the only kind of love. There is also love as a virtue, love is a settled disposition to do good for others, is action orientated and characterised by compassion, kindness and self-sacrifice. Professor Jameel argues that love in education is truly about unselfing and by unselfing and not only thinking about “us”, but we also connect for the good and love becomes service justice and care. Isn’t this what education is really about. Not only the teaching of our students, but also about kindness, compassion and care.
I think it is inspiring to hear colleague’s conversations when they say, “I love my job” or “I love the kids I teach” in an outward display of language in a virtuous context. Love for education and those involved should not be demonised but, in a character perspective, be encouraged. As the year draws to a conclusion, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all in the Bacchus Marsh Grammar community a joyous and safe Christmas and holiday period. It is certainly the time of year to embrace the universal virtue of love and to think of others less fortunate and show compassion, kindness and support.

The Junior School Christmas concert was a cheerful end of year celebration. The John Leaver Gymnasium was brought to life with lots of Christmas colour, cheer and music. Students had worked hard to learn and rehearse their performances, and the audience enjoyed the blend of traditional and contemporary Christmas songs.
Our Violinists encouraged everyone in the audience to sing along with their mix of traditional and new KPOP tunes. The Preps stole our hearts with their big smiles and groovy dance moves and the special surprise appearance of Santa added to this fun occasion. Throughout the concert, students showed our School Values in meaningful ways. Respect was evident in how they worked together and sat respectfully watching their peers. Discipline in their focused during rehearsals and Kindness in the way they encouraged one another on stage. Their Ambition and Confidence were clear as they learnt new musical instruments and choreography. Their determination and commitment were clear on stage as they shone brightly in front of their families and peers.
Congratulations to all Junior School students and teachers on their wonderful performance.
Events of this scale rely on the work of many teams behind the scenes. I would like to extend our thanks to:
Our Music/Sound Tech, Events, Maintenance, and ICT Teams, for the set-up, pack-down, and the countless jobs in between that ensure our space and ready for our families to enjoy another memorable and magical Christmas concert.
What a wonderful way to celebrate the end of the year!
Photos will be available on Schoolbox next week.

What an incredible day we had for our Prep to Year 2 Fun Run and Tabloid Sports! The sunshine turned on its very best for us, providing the perfect backdrop for a morning filled with laughter, teamwork and active fun.
Our students showed amazing enthusiasm as they rotated through a range of classic events including the egg and spoon race, tug of war, sack race and the always-entertaining three-legged race. During the Fun Run, every student demonstrated wonderful stamina and perseverance, pushing themselves to keep going and celebrating each small victory along the way. Smiles were everywhere as students encouraged one another, tried their best and celebrated each other’s efforts.
A huge thank you to all the parents who came along to cheer, help and join in the fun. Your energy and involvement made the day even more special for our youngest learners.
To cap off a brilliant day, the teachers lined up for the much-anticipated staff sack race. With impressive speed and skill, Mrs. Smith took out the win convincingly, leaving the crowd buzzing and the teachers laughing.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to such a memorable and joy-filled event. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!
Junior School Physical Education Team
Year 3 students went on a camping adventure to Lady Northcote. The activities were a highlight, from canoeing on the dam (with a few surprise dips into the water) to patiently waiting on the dock while yabbying. Although only a few yabbies were caught, everyone agreed that sitting in the sunshine, chatting and watching the canoes glide by was wonderfully relaxing.
The giant swing was another standout activity, giving students a chance to test their bravery while relying on their classmates for encouragement and teamwork as they were harnessed in and lifted high into the air. Archery tested the students’ aim and concentration, with games to make it even more challenging.
Bike riding was another exciting adventure, with some students trying this skill for the very first time and proudly gaining confidence as they rode around the camp. Adding to the adventure, students loved making their own pizzas in the woodfire ovens, chopping their own ingredients, kneading the dough and creating a delicious snack.
Evenings at camp were just as special as the days. A night walk on the first night gave students the chance to experience the bush after dark, listening carefully to the sounds of nature and spotting what they could under the glow of their torches. On the second night, students gathered for a movie, relaxing with friends and winding down after action-packed days of activities.
On the final day, students took part in a lively scavenger hunt, racing around the campgrounds with maps in hand to complete challenges and earn points for their teams. It was the perfect way to wrap up such a fun and adventurous camp. The Year 3 teachers were incredibly proud of the confidence, resilience and positivity that students demonstrated on camp.
Bethan White – Head of Year 3 (Maddingley)
Our Year 4 Graduation was held on Wednesday following the final Junior School Assembly for the year. During the assembly, the Year 4 Leaders and House Leaders formally handed over the reins to the newly selected Year 3 Leaders and House Leaders, marking an important moment of continuity and student leadership within the Junior School.
The Graduation ceremony celebrated the students’ achievements as they concluded their time in Junior School and prepared to move into Middle School. Selected students delivered heartfelt speeches, reflecting on their early memories of Bacchus Marsh Grammar and their final year in Junior School. They also shared their hopes and aspirations for their transition to Year 5 and the years ahead.
The whole Year 4 cohort confidently performed This Is Me, showcasing their unity, enthusiasm and pride. At the conclusion of the ceremony, parents were invited to join their children for a morning tea, providing a warm and joyful finish to this special milestone.

On Thursday 11 December, our Junior School community gathered to celebrate the end of the academic year. The Christmas Celebration was a great way to conclude the year, with students performing confidently and singing a range of songs themed around an Australian Bush Christmas.
Students shared their music, singing and festive spirit as they presented their Christmas items. The final item, where all year levels came together to sing in the Junior School quadrangle, was a beautiful way to finish the event.
We are very proud of all the students for their wonderful performances and grateful to their teachers for the time and effort that went into preparing them. We also extend our thanks to our parent community for attending and supporting the students on this special day.
Photos will be available on Schoolbox next week.
Sally Savic – Assistant Principal: Head of Junior School (Woodlea)
During our final Junior School assembly, we honoured our current cohort of Year 4 students to mark the end of their Junior School journey. During the assembly, the Year 4 cohort performed a song called Sunflowers, written by Alison Thompson, one of our music teachers. The song beautifully encapsulates the tremendous growth the students have made during their time in Junior School, drawing on the metaphor of our students being like sunflowers who turn towards the sun.
Later in the day, the cohort came together for a smaller assembly where each student was presented with a certificate along with a novel as a keepsake of their time in Junior School.
It was a lovely celebration of their achievements, and we are incredibly proud of each student as they take this exciting next step into Middle School.
Aimee La Franchi – Head of Year 4 (Woodlea) /Teaching and Learning Coordinator Prep – 4 (Woodlea)
Our Year 3 students recently completed their three-day camp at Lady Northcote, coming away with new skills, memorable stories and a strong sense of pride in their achievements. The experience offered a valuable opportunity to build confidence, strengthen friendships and enjoy outdoor learning that encouraged cooperation and curiosity.
Across the camp, students took part in a wide range of activities, including the giant swing, canoeing, archery, yabbying, pizza making, bike riding and a variety of team challenges. Evenings were spent enjoying shared experiences such as a bushwalk through the native landscape and a relaxed movie night. Each activity encouraged students to support one another, think through problems and recognise the efforts of their peers.
Throughout the camp, children consistently demonstrated the school values. They showed respect for the environment and for one another, kindness through their encouragement and support of peers, and ambition by approaching new challenges with confidence. Many stepped outside their comfort zones, whether by trying something new, managing their belongings independently, or spending nights away from home for the first time.
It was a memorable experience for all involved, and we are excited to see how these moments continue to shape their learning and growth as they move into Year 4.
Year 3 Woodlea Teachers
The Year 4 cohort enjoyed a three-day camp at Lake Dewar Recreation Camp. Over the three days, students participated in eight different activities that were thrilling, challenging and fulfilling.
The camp offered students the opportunity to challenge themselves and step outside of their comfort zones with the support of their peers and teachers. It was wonderful to see how students came together during activities such as the giant flying fox, offering encouragement to those who were feeling less confident.
Camp was a truly rewarding experience that strengthened friendships, built resilience and created memories the students will carry with them for many years to come.
Aimee LaFranchi – Head of Year 4 (Woodlea) /Teaching and Learning Coordinator Prep – 4 (Woodlea)
Our Year 5 students recently enjoyed a fantastic excursion to Alliance Française Melbourne, where they immersed themselves in the world of la nourriture (food) and discovered that French is not just a subject in the classroom, it’s a living language spoken by people every day!
Highlights of the day included a hands-on food-tasting workshop featuring baguette avec confiture, croissants and pain au chocolat, lively memory games using French vocabulary, creative food-art activities and a fun shopping and food-sorting challenge, all conducted entirely in French. Students also demonstrated our school values as they navigated the Melbourne CBD with responsibility and pride.
Student reflections were equally positive, with comments such as “I spoke a lot of French today,” “I can use the French I learned to talk to a French person and understand what they are telling me”, and “I thought it was great, especially when we got to try the French baguette avec confiture, the croissants and pain au chocolat.”
The excursion was not only educational but also inspiring and the students left with a deeper appreciation of French culture and the confidence to use their language skills in real-life situations. It was truly an awesome day of learning, discovery and fun!

Our Year 6 Maddingley Celebration Day was an unforgettable highlight of the year and a remarkable way to celebrate our 2025 cohort, a cohort that has worked hard throughout the year to achieve amazing things within the school community.
The morning began with a warm and welcoming atmosphere as families joined us for a ceremony, bear signings, photo opportunities, and catch ups. Students proudly collected signatures and messages on their celebration bears, keepsakes they will treasure for years to come. This led to morning tea shared with families, creating a relaxed moment to acknowledge the growth, achievements, and friendships that have shaped their primary years.
From there, the energy of the day only grew. Students rotated through a series of exciting, hands on activities, including Clay Sculpting, Minute to Win It challenges, and painting sessions. Classrooms were a buzz as students worked together, encouraged one another, and threw themselves enthusiastically into each activity.
The celebrations ended on a high with an afternoon party session complete with a DJ and a photo booth. Students enjoyed time on the dance floor spurred on by crowd favourite tracks, and the joy of celebrating together for the final time as a Year 6 cohort. The photo booth was constantly filled with friends capturing memories and non-stop smiles.
The day was the perfect blend of sentiment, celebration, creativity, and fun, a true reflection of the vibrant, resilient, and connected group our Year 6 students have become.
We wish our Year 6 students all the best as they continue to move through the middle school and set their sights on the future and the opportunities it holds for them.

Throughout Semester Two, Year 7 and 8 students have been working together to discover their full potential in Jumpstart. Students were encouraged to self reflect on their career goals, values and aspirations.
We participated in many activities such as a workshop session involving career and goal setting and a day at Staughton Vale.
Crazy Ideas College ran a workshop and students worked in groups to design an imaginary person, complete with a job, appearance and personality – this helped us to reflect on our career goals.
Team skills included a competition in which teams attempted to build a tower with pasta, cups and tape with the goal of putting a marshmallow on top and seeing how high it could go.
Students started a ‘my future account’ where surveys were completed and recommendations for ideal job positions were provided including earnings and statistics based on our traits and qualities.
At Staughton Vale, we took part in several activities including teamwork games, and we worked in the garden where we planted sunflowers, potatoes and basil, picked peas and removed weeds.
To finish the program, Mr Knipe worked with us to design a logo for the program, updated our My Future accounts, and reflected at photos from Staughton Vale.
This program opened our eyes to our future potential when it comes to jobs and taught us to identify our values and to believe in our dreams.

The Middle School House Music event was a tremendous success among our students, creating an atmosphere filled with enthusiasm, teamwork, and school spirit. Throughout the day, students proudly demonstrated our core values of courage, respect, and kindness, both on stage and behind the scenes. Their willingness to perform, support their peers, and celebrate one another’s achievements was truly commendable.
The Disney theme added an extra layer of excitement, with many students singing along to their favourite songs and showcasing impressive creativity through their choreography and costume choices. It was wonderful to see students stepping outside their comfort zones, collaborating with their houses, and contributing ideas that made each performance unique and memorable.
A heartfelt congratulations goes out to all Middle School students for their hard work, dedication, and positive attitude. Events like this highlight the strength of our school community, and I am already looking forward to continuing and growing this tradition in the years to come.

Our Year 6 Woodlea Celebration Day was a wonderful success and a fitting way to honour our 2025 cohort. This group holds a special place in our school’s history as the first group to begin their journey in both ELC Woodlea and Prep Woodlea and continue right through to the end of primary school. Their Celebration Day marked not only the end of Year 6 but the completion of a significant chapter in their schooling.
We began the morning with a special assembly attended by families. During the assembly, we were privileged to welcome the Honourable Ms Alice Jordan Baird, Federal Member for Gorton. Ms Baird presented the Gorton Young Leader Award to Aishnoor K (6WD), recognising her outstanding leadership as the Kangaroo bus leader throughout the year. Aishnoor has consistently demonstrated initiative, kindness and responsibility, supported younger students and assisted staff to ensure everyone travelled safely and on time. This recognition was thoroughly deserved.
Following the assembly, families enjoyed a catered morning tea, creating a warm atmosphere to reflect on the students’ achievements and growth. Midday festivities included students signing their celebration bears, playing ball sports and enjoying giant Jenga. It was heart-warming to see all Year 6 students mixing, laughing and celebrating one another as valued members of the Woodlea learning community.
The afternoon disco and photo booth were definite highlights. Students danced confidently, sang along to their favourite songs and embraced the joy of the moment. Many commented that it was the best day they had ever had and expressed their gratitude for such a memorable celebration.
Some of our students shared their reflections:
Gursanjog G (6WA): “I liked the disco because of the songs and how everyone was together and dancing. Nobody was excluded.”
Sabir V (6WB): “Yesterday’s disco was so exciting and full of energy that I danced non-stop, laughed with my friends, and had the best time ever. I was having so much fun that I got completely exhausted. I also really liked the songs the DJ played.”
Lily V (6WC): “Yesterday was very energetic and joyful. We enjoyed all the activities planned for our celebration. I enjoyed the disco most because it was very nice to dance with our friends for the last two periods.”
Shanuki K (6WD): “The Celebration Assembly was fun as we got to see other people speak and Aishnoor got an award. We loved signing our bears and every student was so excited to sign them. We were even more excited to get icy poles! After the disco everyone was very tired because that was the most jumping around we have ever done.”
Our Year 6 Woodlea Celebration Day was a truly meaningful event. It was full of pride, gratitude and joy. We congratulate our Year 6 students on their achievements and wish them all the very best as they prepare for the next exciting stage of their learning journey.

The Spooky Sculpture Competition, which was held from 15 October to 14 November, was a resounding success! From promoting our event, participating and putting up posters, we all thank you for making this event possible. This event was proudly brought to you by members of the SRC and was championed by Aashvi K and Yana P.
We were absolutely blown away by the number of entries as well as the outstanding craftsmanship displayed by everyone who took part! This made the judging process very tricky for our SRC Leaders and Visual Arts Leaders who worked hard to judge each entry equally and with fairness. After much deliberation, our student judges, Yana P, Aashvi K, Sarika S and Janella M, finally made their decisions.
Here are the winners for 2025:
1st Place: Akein P 7WE
The tree was extremely well sculpted and had lots of texture which made it very realistic. Their use of white for snow tied together the mood of his piece very well and fitted the theme. Using twigs for the front area was extremely creative and showed a good use of different media as well. The best part that ultimately led us to select them was the outstanding creativity to make the tree hollow light up. Another part we noticed was using wax to create ghosts to add to the setting of the piece.
2nd Place: Chelsea K 7WE
Coraline’s idea was a classic yet interesting take on the Halloween theme which immediately drew us to the piece. The intricate details of her arms, legs and facial details were very skilfully crafted, and we loved the use of fabric for her leggings and sleeves. There was a plant pot which was the tunnel in the door from the movie, and it was creative to see the dimensions made through almost an illusion of using the wider end of the pot at the front. The colours in the tunnel were also very well blended and true to the movie.
3rd Place: Parini M 6WA
The pumpkin patch with a dragon was well-fitted to the theme. We loved the adorable portrayal of the dragon and found the material used for the hay as a nice touch. The colours went well together, and the best part was using candy corn for the spikes on the dragon. It was clear that a lot of thought and effort went into making this piece.
Honourable Mention: Ritvik P 7WD
It was enjoyable reading all the text around the graveyard, and we loved the interactivity of the piece. The haunted house was measured perfectly and all the pieces fitted well together, giving it a rough-looking exterior that suited the Halloween theme. It was rather impressive that only cardboard was used to make this structure.
Overall, this event was a great experience for all involved. Thank you again to everyone who took part!
Yana P – 6WA
Sarika S – 8WC
16 dedicated dancers from BMG recently returned from an unforgettable five-day Sydney Dance Tour, where they immersed themselves in one of Australia’s most vibrant and inspiring dance communities.
Across the week, our students completed six high-level workshops at some of Sydney’s most renowned studios including the Sydney Dance Company, Danceworks, and Aerialize. Guided by industry professionals, the dancers strengthened their improvisational skills, enhanced muscle memory, and built both physical and artistic strength. They explored a diverse range of styles, Contemporary, Broadway, Jazz and Lyrical, broadening their versatility and deepening their passion for dance.
The tour also provided rich opportunities to experience the arts as audience members. Students attended the spectacular production of Back to the Future at the Lyric Theatre and witnessed the cutting-edge contemporary work New Breed at Carriageworks, both of which offered fresh creative insight and inspiration.
Outside the studio and theatre, the group enjoyed a rare backstage tour of the iconic Sydney Opera House, took in the harbour views from the ferry to Manly and embraced the thrills of Luna Park.
We are incredibly proud of all 16 students who represented BMG with enthusiasm, maturity and integrity. Their teamwork, behaviour and commitment throughout the tour showcased our school values with great pride.
The 2025 Sydney Dance Tour was a week of challenge, growth and joy, an experience our dancers will carry with them as they continue their training and performance journeys.

To celebrate the end of an incredible year, our Year 9 students embarked on an unforgettable Inspire Day in Melbourne. This teacher-led initiative gave students the opportunity to explore some of the city’s most iconic and inspiring locations, creating lasting memories and sparking curiosity beyond the classroom.
Students chose from a range of enriching experiences, including an MCG tour where they discovered the history and heart of Australian sport, a visit to the Shrine of Remembrance and the Botanical Gardens, offering moments of reflection and an appreciation of nature’s beauty, an immersive exploration of film, media and digital storytelling at ACMI, a journey through Melbourne’s vibrant street art and historic laneways on the Art & Arcades walk, and the Book Lovers’ Trail, where students delved into the city’s rich literary treasures.
The day was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication and planning of our amazing team. A huge thank you to Vanessa Kamcev, Daniel Browne, Ben Northcott, Alana Kappler, Nicole Heywood and Molly Fitzgerald for curating these experiences and ensuring everything ran smoothly.
We extend special thanks to Nicole Heywood and Muntasha Khan for their exceptional effort and behind-the-scenes work that made this day possible. Your commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for our students truly shines.
This Inspire Day was more than just an excursion, it was a celebration of learning, connection and exploration. What a fantastic way to finish the year!
Stacey-Lee Viljoen – Head of Year 9 (Woodlea) Head of Duke of Edinburgh (Woodlea)
We are proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students across academics, sport, leadership and community service.
On the final two days of term, both campuses held their award ceremonies. The 2025 Awards recognise the hard work, dedication, and excellence demonstrated by students from Year 5 through to Year 11. Two of our students have been crowned Australian National Champions at the 2025 Oz Schools Instrumental Championships National Finals in Melbourne, where state champions from across the nation competed for the title of Australian National Champion.
Vivaan A (Year 2D) achieved a remarkable distinction, becoming the only competitor in the entire competition to secure first place in two different instruments. Vivaan was crowned Australian National Champion in both Drums and Piano in the Primary Junior Division (Prep – Grade 2). Competing against state champions from Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, Vivaan’s achievement was formally acknowledged during the awards ceremony. Following third-place finishes in both instruments at the State Finals, Vivaan demonstrated exceptional dedication over six weeks of focused preparation, ultimately securing both national titles.
Micah S (Year 11F) was awarded first place in the Secondary Senior Division (Years 10-12) for Pianoforte, claiming the title of Australian National Champion. After securing second place at the State Finals in October, Micah competed against the nation’s finest young pianists, including students with extensive experience in national and international competitions. This achievement complements Micah’s recent invitation to perform in a masterclass with renowned concert pianist Konstantin Shamray at the University of Melbourne’s Ian Potter Southbank Centre, led by Professor Jerry Wong, Associate Professor of Music and Head of Piano and Keyboard.
Both students have exemplified our school values of discipline, confidence and ambition through their outstanding musical achievements.
We extend our warmest congratulations to Vivaan and Micah on these outstanding achievements.

On Monday 1 December, our Grade 6 students spent a memorable day at Staughton Vale, immersing themselves in the natural environment of our rural campus. Over the course of the day, students took part in four hands-on, outdoor activities that celebrated both teamwork and nature.
First, they helped plant sunflowers, a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the campus gardens and learn about the growth cycle of plants. Next, they picked fresh strawberries, enjoying the fruits of the orchard and connecting with food-growing in a real farm environment. Our students then made lemonade, blending fun with practical learning and bringing the harvest to life in a refreshing treat.
Finally, they went on a guided walk around the campus, but this wasn’t just a stroll. Their walk took them past the campus’s aquaponics system and aquarium, where fish are raised and water-based ecosystems maintained. They also visited the farm’s dams and natural waterways, seeing first-hand the many waterways, ponds and natural features of the property. This gave students a real sense of how water, land and living systems connect at Staughton Vale.
The day was not only a chance for the students to get their hands dirty and enjoy nature, but also to build a deeper appreciation for sustainable food-growing, environmental systems and the natural landscape. It was a joyous and educational experience, one that captured the spirit of what Staughton Vale offers: connection, community and a love of the land.
Well done to all the Grade 6s for their enthusiasm, curiosity and teamwork. As well as many thanks to the staff for organising such a special day!
As we reflected on the day, many students remarked on how the visit changed their view of food and nature, from seeing lunch as something that comes from the supermarket, to recognising that fruit, vegetables and even fresh water require care, patience and respect for the environment. The time spent planting, harvesting and exploring farms and waterways helped them feel proud to be part of caring for the land, and inspired a deeper interest in how we grow our food and look after nature.

Our aquaponics facility in the Hayshed has taken an exciting step forward with the introduction of silver perch to the system. These hardy Australian native fish are an ideal species for aquaponics, helping to create a balanced, sustainable cycle that supports healthy plant growth. Students will now be able to observe and learn from a fully functioning aquaponics ecosystem, gaining hands-on experience in water quality testing, system maintenance and sustainable food production.
This addition marks another positive development in our expanding horticulture and environmental studies programs, further enriching learning opportunities across the Staughton Vale Campus.

Maddingley students and staff were treated to a fresh and colourful display of home-grown produce this week, thanks to the Pop-Up Farm Stand proudly hosted on campus. The stand featured an impressive range of vegetables and seedlings harvested by our Maddingley Year 5 students during their recent Farm Day at Staughton Vale.
Students worked together to gather crisp lettuces, cauliflower, vibrant spring onions, sweet strawberries, and a selection of healthy vegetable seedlings. Their enthusiasm and care for the harvest were evident, with many commenting on how rewarding it was to see the results of their efforts.
The Pop-Up Farm Stall not only showcased the high-quality produce grown through our horticultural programs, but also highlighted the hands-on learning opportunities available to students. Thank you to the Year 5 cohort and staff for bringing a touch of the farm to Maddingley and celebrating the value of sustainable, locally grown food. The funds raised were donated to the Neighbour’s Place in Bacchus Marsh, complementing the SRC’s Food Train initiative this Christmas.
