Principal’s Welcome and Key Updates

I would like to warmly welcome all of our new and returning families and staff to Bacchus Marsh Grammar for the commencement of the school year. I hope the year has begun smoothly for you and that your child has settled positively into their learning routines. It has been a pleasure to see the energy across our campuses as classrooms come alive once again.

I would like to share a brief update on a number of building projects currently underway. At the Maddingley Campus, the completion of the Administration Building has enabled a much-needed expansion of office space for our business and support teams. While the South Maddingley Road entry to the building will remain under construction for several more weeks, families should note that this will continue to impact visitor access and car parking. Student pick-up and drop-off during peak morning and afternoon times remains via the Gatehouse only, and we thank families for their patience during this period.

Construction of the Senior Science Building at Maddingley is also progressing well, with works now moving into the next phase. This important learning facility remains on track for completion in mid to late 2026 and will provide outstanding specialist spaces for our senior students.

At the Woodlea Campus, families will notice fencing in place, marking the building envelope for the new Senior Learning Centre. This is an exciting development for our growing Woodlea Senior School community, and further updates will be shared as the project progresses later this semester.

This year has also seen the implementation of our new timetable structure, designed to better support students through explicit teaching, strengthened pastoral and wellbeing connections, and a broader range of learning and enrichment opportunities. The introduction of our new enrichment program is an exciting step forward as we continue to focus on knowing our students well and providing meaningful opportunities to build connection, teamwork, confidence and a strong sense of belonging. I look forward to visiting classrooms and seeing students engage enthusiastically with this program.

I would also like to remind families of the importance of road safety, particularly during peak pick-up and drop-off times. We ask parents and guardians to remain vigilant around crossings, train lines and school car parks, and to be mindful of students travelling on foot or by bike. Students are similarly reminded to be alert and road-smart when travelling to and from school — using designated crossings, avoiding distractions such as mobile phones or headphones, and exercising care around traffic.

I look forward to working in partnership with our families throughout the year as we support our students to be safe, well and striving for their personal best.

New School Year

As we begin the 2026 school year, it has been wonderful to see our Junior School students return with big smiles, presented neatly in their summer uniforms and an enthusiasm ready to learn. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all families, including those returning and those joining our school community.

The beginning of the school year brings many positives. Students are settling well into new classroom routines, creating new friendships, developing independence and engaging confidently in the classroom with their teachers and peers. Our youngest learners have shown great confidence and curiosity as they begin their learning journey at Bacchus Marsh Grammar.

This year, we maintain a strong focus on all areas of the curriculum ensuring students experience rich opportunities across all subject areas.

Please refer to Schoolbox Family Engagement pages for your child’s year level. These pages contain the most current information about learning and upcoming events. It is updated regularly and provides an overview of the weekly learning focus across all classroom-based curriculum areas. You will also find additional learning materials and resources to support your child, along with specialist curriculum information under the relevant subject tiles.

Another exciting moment was the commencement of our new structured enrichment program; activities have been designed to complement and extend students classroom learning. These activities form an important element of the school’s mission to develop our virtues, values and character education, supporting our students to think critically, work collaboratively and approach challenges with confidence and persistence. We look forward to sharing more updates with our school community throughout the term via Schoolbox.

Positive partnerships between home and school play an important role in supporting student success. If parents or guardians need to contact teachers, communication can occur through the student school diary, via email or by arranging a suitable meeting time.

We look forward to supporting every student to engage positively with their learning, build respectful relationships and develop confidence in themselves as capable learners. Thank you for your continued support of our Junior School as we look ahead to a calm, productive, fun and engaging year.

New Year at Maddingley

It has been a very positive start to the new school year, and we were fortunate to return just as the heat eased. Our Year 7 students began their first day with a variety of enjoyable activities designed to help them settle in, build friendships and begin feeling comfortable in their new surroundings. These activities were particularly helpful for students who are new to BMG, giving them a chance to learn the layout of the school while getting to know their peers.

Throughout the day, students received their new Chromebooks for the year and completed a number of important administrative tasks, including locating their lockers and having their ID photographs taken. We were pleased to have the support of our Year 9 Peer Support students who worked alongside our Tutor Teachers to run the activities. These Peer Support students will continue working with the Year 7 classes throughout the year, providing leadership and guidance. This programme benefits both groups as our older students gain valuable leadership experience and our Year 7 students build connections with students who have recently begun their journey in the Senior School.

Our Year 7 students are now preparing for their upcoming camp from 11 to 13 February. I strongly encourage all students to attend. While spending a few nights away from home may feel challenging, the memories and friendships formed on school camps often become some of the most significant and enjoyable experiences students carry with them from their time at BMG.

On Friday, we welcomed the entire Middle School back to campus. It was wonderful to see the grounds filled with returning students, and the atmosphere was lively and full of excitement. We recognise that settling back into school routines takes time and, over the next few weeks, we will be supporting students as they re-establish the rhythm of school life.

To assist with this transition, particularly for Years 5 and 7 where we often welcome new students to the Middle School, we will once again stagger the introduction of homework. Homework will officially begin in Week 4, starting with Mathematics and English, followed by Science and Humanities and then all remaining subjects. Prior to Week 4, any homework set will be optional for students and families who wish to begin earlier.

This term will offer many opportunities for students to learn, grow and become more involved in school life. Our new engagement activities will take place every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, allowing students to meet peers from across the Middle School and take part in activities that interest them. This will help strengthen our sense of community and belonging. We will also begin Swimming Trials in preparation for the Swimming Carnival on 19 February. In addition, students will be training during sport lessons for the Sports Carnival which will be held on 30 March.

It will be a busy and exciting time in the Middle School, and our team is here to support your child through what can sometimes be a confusing or anxious period of adjustment. We kindly ask for your support in a few ways. Please read your child’s diary regularly, as it contains important information and expectations that students rely upon each day. Please also continue to access Schoolbox which will help you stay informed about homework, assessments and classroom activities.

Thank you for placing your trust in us as we guide and support your child this year. If you have any questions, please contact us. For academic concerns, your child’s subject teacher is the most appropriate first contact. For general or pastoral matters, their Tutor Teacher will be able to assist. Your child’s Head of Year is also available should further support be required.

I look forward to another successful year of growing and learning in the Middle School.
Scott Bayne – Assistant Principal, Head of Middle School (Maddingley)

Welcome back to Woodlea

The new school year is off to a fantastic start in the Middle School at Woodlea, with a real sense of energy and enthusiasm across the community. Students have embraced a new timetable designed to enhance enrichment opportunities at every level, and both students and staff have shown great flexibility and curiosity as they explore a wide range of interest-based and academically focused programs.

New and returning students have settled confidently into Middle School routines. Our Year 7 students are looking forward to their upcoming visit to Staughton Vale this week, where they will build on their orientation experiences through engaging activities that strengthen peer connections, as well as preparing for their camp later this term.

House Swimming trials have now been completed at Woodlea, and we extend a huge thank you to the students and staff who made the event such a success. The event was a showcase of House pride, healthy competition and outstanding sporting spirit.

Middle School students have received their Chromebooks, revisited key information in their diaries, and are already hard at work shaping classroom environments and cultures that reflect both the School’s values and their own passions and interests.

Year 7 students are now preparing for camp from 11–13 February, and we strongly encourage all students to attend. Camps are a valuable opportunity to build friendships, confidence and lasting memories. Looking ahead, our Year 6 students will also have the exciting opportunity to visit Canberra from 16–20 March. With further swimming events, Staughton Vale trips across all year levels, and a range of incursions and excursions planned for Year 8 and Year 5, Term One promises to be a vibrant and engaging one.

Middle School staff are committed to supporting students through this busy and rewarding transition period. We encourage families to regularly check student diaries and Schoolbox for important updates. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. Please contact subject teachers for academic enquiries, Tutor Teachers for general concerns, or Heads of Year for additional support. We look forward to a positive and successful year ahead in the Middle School.

Michael Abramovic – Assistant Principal: Head of Middle School (Woodlea)

SENIOR SCHOOL

Welcome to 2026

Welcome to the beginning of the 2026 school year and a very warm welcome to all our returning students, as well as those new to Senior School. We are delighted to have you as part of our community and look forward to a year filled with learning, growth and opportunity.

Term 1 is always a busy and exciting time in the Senior School, offering students many opportunities to become involved and engaged. The Inspire Program designed for our Year 9 and 10 students, with a strong focus on supporting students in their academic and personal growth. This year also sees the introduction of new Masterclasses for students undertaking Unit 3 and 4 subjects, providing targeted extension, deeper learning and academic enrichment. Alongside these, a range of Enrichment Program for Years 9 to 12 that will further enhance students’ opportunities to develop themselves.

We were thrilled to welcome our Year 9 students into the Senior School with a day out at Lake Dewar. Students participated in a variety of activities that provided valuable opportunities to strengthen existing friendships and create new ones, helping them feel connected and supported as they begin this important stage of their schooling.

Our Year 10 students will soon be heading to Staughton Vale to take part in their Indigenous day activities. This experience provides meaningful learning opportunities and encourages students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture and perspectives.

As Year 11 students begin the term, they are focusing on goal setting as they step into their VCE program. This important stage encourages students to reflect on their strengths, identify areas for growth, and set clear academic and personal goals for the year ahead. By developing these skills early, students are building a strong foundation for effective study habits, resilience, and motivation, helping them to approach the challenges of VCE with confidence and purpose.

Year 12 students have also had an exciting start to the year, participating in their Year 12 Development Day, which included a number of guest speakers and hands-on activities designed to inspire and motivate them for their final year of schooling. Adding to the sense of occasion, students were proud to receive their Year 12 jumpers, marking an important milestone in their Senior School journey.

Tutor Group time plays an important role in supporting our Senior School students and is led by a dedicated Tutor Group Teacher who works closely with students throughout the year. This time is focused on preparing students for the future and supports their development across a range of areas, including study skills, building positive relationships, pastoral care and student wellbeing, as well as careers guidance and planning. We remind parents and carers that their child’s Tutor Group Teacher is the first point of contact should you require support or have any concerns, as they are best placed to provide guidance and assist in coordinating further support when needed.

As Senior School students, our young people play an important role as leaders and role models within the wider Bacchus Marsh Grammar community. We encourage all students to take pride in wearing the correct school uniform each day, as this demonstrates respect for themselves, their peers and the school. By presenting themselves well, Senior School students set a positive example for younger students and contribute to a culture of pride, responsibility and high expectations across the school.

We look forward to a positive and successful term ahead and thank you for your continued support of the Senior School.

Natalie Desira – Assistant Principal: Head of Senior School (Maddingley)

Maddingley Campus: An Exciting Start to the Sporting Calendar

The upcoming school year at Maddingley Campus is shaping up to be an exciting one, with a strong focus on participation, school spirit, and providing students with valuable opportunities to represent both their House and the School.

Term 1 will be a particularly busy period, beginning with our House Swimming Carnivals where students will compete for House pride and points. This will be followed by the BMPSSA and ICCES Swimming Carnivals, giving our swimmers the chance to represent the School in interschool competitions. Our senior students will also take part in the VCE Summer Sport Challenge Day against Braemar College and Girton Grammar, offering a competitive and engaging experience early in the year.

Adding to the excitement, ICCES Winter Tour training will commence during our new Enrichment Period. This will allow selected students to prepare thoroughly as we look to go one better and claim the ICCES Winter Tour title this year.

The term will conclude with the House Athletics Carnivals for both Junior School and Middle School students. These events provide all students with the opportunity to get involved, support their House and experience the excitement of school sport.

With such a strong start to the year, students will be presented with exciting opportunities to represent their House and School, build confidence and contribute to a positive and inclusive sporting culture at BMG.

Woodlea Campus Sporting Year

The upcoming school year at the BMG Woodlea Campus is set to begin with a strong emphasis on participation, House spirit and healthy competition.

Term 1 will be a busy and engaging period, beginning with our House Swimming Carnivals and Junior School House Cross Country events. These carnivals will place a strong focus on House pride, participation and friendly competition, providing all students with the opportunity to contribute to their House and be actively involved in school sport.

Students will also have the opportunity to represent the School at the MPSSA Swimming Carnival and the MPSSA Summer Lightning Cup, offering valuable interschool competition experiences for our Woodlea athletes.

As part of our ongoing sporting structure, it is important to note that ACS Major Carnivals — Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country — will be represented by Woodlea Campus students only from 2026 onwards. This is a fantastic opportunity for the continued involvement in inter school competitions for our Year 7-12 students.

These experiences will help set the tone for the year ahead, encouraging students to stay active, connected and proud to represent the Woodlea Campus.

Astrophotography Highlight: Orion’s Belt

This is Alnitak, the left-hand star of Orion’s Belt, captured alongside two of the night sky’s most famous nebulae: the Flame Nebula and the Horsehead Nebula. These remarkable features lie hundreds of light-years from Earth and are part of an active region of star formation.

This photograph was taken using the school’s telescope and a single 300-second exposure through a Hydrogen Alpha filter, which allows glowing hydrogen gas within the nebulae to be revealed in striking detail. We are very pleased with the performance of the telescope during this session. While a few technical challenges remain, the most pressing issue was identified and resolved on Thursday, marking an encouraging step forward for future observations.

Conquering Your Anxiety

Bacchus Marsh Grammar is excited to offer the C’YA! (Conquering Your Anxiety) Program which is a school-based program to support students from Years 3 to 12. The C’YA! Program, which will be offered to students in Term 2, will focus on understanding feelings of anxiety, identifying body signals and exploring strategies to assist in managing these feelings. C’YA! is a six-session program which will be run in small groups during class time, facilitated by a staff member from the Student Wellbeing Team.

Anxiety is a normal and natural emotion; however, anxiety can be a problem when it interferes with your child’s everyday life. Anxiety can present at school in many ways. If you have a child who is in Year 3 to 12 whose daily functioning is being impacted by their experience of anxiety and feel they would benefit from participating in this program, please register your interest by contacting a member of our Student Wellbeing Team by Wednesday 25 February.

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is held on Tuesday 10 February. Recognised all over the world as a day where organisations come together to raise awareness on online safety and making the internet a safer place. In Australia, it is led by the E-Safety Commissioner, the Australian Government’s online safety regulator.

Safer Internet Day is a vital day for all as we navigate an everchanging online environment. While the internet helps young people connect, learn and socialise, it can also have risks. Safer Internet Day focuses on opening conversations about what the risks are online, and what small things we can do to make it safer.

There are many trusted sources you can go to for support on supporting children and teens with being safe online, including The E-Safety Commissioner WebsiteRaising Children Network and ReachOut.

Roll Call

On 22 January 2026, parents were sent a ‘Welcome’ email from Roll Call inviting them to activate the Roll Call app.  Roll Call is for parents whose children travel on private buses, so they can track the bus in real time and receive notifications of when their child/ren tap on/off the bus.  Roll Call is also for parents whose children do not travel on private buses but when they board a bus for a camp, excursion etc.  It is advised ALL parents activate their Roll Call account.

Change of Stops

AM/PM changes: If parents require their child to change their AM or PM stop permanently, please contact the School Bus Services Administrator so this can be updated on Roll Call.  For the safety of students and drivers, it is very important that stops are up-to-date on Roll Call.  If students are to disembark as a “one off” at a different stop on their designated route, parents are to update this in Roll Call prior to 1.30pm on the day of travel.

Note: If students are not travelling via their private bus in the morning, parents DO NOT need to advise the school or update Roll Call. If your student is absent from school, parents are to call the absentee line at their child’s campus and leave a message.  Roll Call does not need to be adjusted.

If students in Prep – Year 6 are not travelling home via bus, a note in the child’s diary is required in advance for the class teacher.

ID Cards

Students will be issued with a Student ID cards. Students MUST use their Student ID card to tap on/off the bus.  Student ID cards are compulsory when boarding a private bus or attending all school excursions/camps etc and they must be always carried. Students who board the bus repeatedly without their ID cards will receive a detention or further consequences.

Student Permission Cards

Students in Prep Reception  – Year 6 require a green permission tag on their bag if they are to disembark the bus to be picked up by someone other than their parent/guardian.  Students in Grades 5 and 6 can disembark the bus on their own if they have a green permission tag on their bag for the driver to check. Student Afternoon Bus Arrangement and Permission Notices are available on Schoolbox under School Letters.  Please return Student Afternoon Bus Arrangement and Permission Notices to bus@bmg.vic.edu.au.

2025 Student Permission tags will be removed from the students’ bags on Friday 13 February 2026.  Any student requiring a permission tag for 2026 must have an updated Student Afternoon Bus Arrangement and Permission Notice completed by this date so a 2026 replacement tag can be attached to their bag.

Lost Property

A reminder to our School Community, and particularly our new families – please ensure all your child/ren’s items are named. This includes all uniform, lunchboxes, drink bottles and stationery.

Lost items are brought to the office and we will make every effort to return them to students via the class pigeon holes.

Conveyance Allowance

The Conveyance Allowance is a contribution towards transport costs and is not intended to cover the full cost of transporting children to and from school.

The Conveyance Allowance may be available to students attending government or non-government schools:

  • travelling by private car, motorbike, bicycle or bus, and
  • whose nearest school is not serviced by a free school bus provided under the School Bus Program or a free Victorian public transport service.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Students must reside 4.8km or more from their nearest school/campus they attend.
  2. Students must be of school age and reside in Victoria
  3. Students must be enrolled in a school for 3 or more days per week.

A student who meets the above requirements may be eligible if they:

  • attend their nearest or designated neighbourhood government school/campus appropriate to their year level, at which admission is permissible, or
  • attend their nearest appropriate non-government school/campus appropriate to their year level, at which admission is permissible, and
  • reside 4.8km or more by the shortest practicable route from the campus attended.

Please note that a Conveyance Allowance is not available where a free bus service is available. From 1 January 2026, people aged under 18 will be able to travel for free on all Victorian public transport services.

Eligibility will be assessed when the school completes your child’s application on the Student Conveyance Allowance System (SCAS). If approved, the allowance payable is based on the one-way distance to make the journey to and from school.

Please note that if BMG is not your nearest school but your decision to send your children to BMG was because you felt that it was the nearest appropriate school that both respected ecumenical values and did not require your child to participate in religious instruction or religious celebration then you may be eligible for the Conveyance Allowance (subject to other Conveyance Allowance rules). However, your application must include a signed supporting letter outlining the reasons above for your decision to send your child to Bacchus Marsh Grammar.

If you already have a Conveyance Allowance application in place and your circumstances have not changed (method of transport to and from school or home address) you will not be required to submit a new application, and your previously approved applications will automatically roll over. Please note that current applications for public transport will not roll over to 2026 as per the above changes. If you have additional children starting at the school and would like to apply for the Conveyance Allowance for them, you will need to submit a new application.

If you have not applied for a Conveyance previously and would like to apply for the allowance in 2026, please obtain an application form from the Schools website www.bmg.vic.edu.au – Admissions – Transport and Bus Network.

New applications can be submitted throughout the school year, however, they must be submitted to the school by no later than Friday 30 October 2026 otherwise parents/guardians risk their claim not being accepted. Please refer to the 2026 Business Notice for further information.

Please direct any queries you may have to Catherine Coombridge or Kate Bridgett at conveyance@bmg.vic.edu.au

School Crossing Safety Awareness Day

Friday 6 February 2026 is School Crossing Safety Awareness Day, held each year on the first Friday in February across Victoria.

This important day recognises the vital role School Crossing Supervisors play in keeping children, families and all pedestrians safe as they travel to and from school. Their dedication helps create safer school environments and stronger communities.

On Friday, you may notice our School Crossing Supervisors wearing a commemorative ribbon in support of the campaign. The ribbon also honours the memory of Brian Beach, a School Crossing Supervisor who tragically lost his life while on duty at his Wodonga school crossing in February 2024.

In support of School Crossing Safety Awareness Day, we ask families and community members to please keep the following important safety messages in mind:

  • School crossings are for everyone, not just students and young people.
  • School zone speed limits must always be obeyed, and motorists should be prepared to stop safely in school areas.
  • Bicycles, scooters and similar devices must be dismounted when using a school crossing.
  • Pedestrians are encouraged to remove headphones or in-ear listening devices when crossing, so they can hear the supervisor’s whistle and surrounding traffic.

Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to supporting our School Crossing Supervisors and helping keep our school communities safe.
