As Term 3 comes to an end, we can look back on a busy and rewarding period for our school. Across all campuses, students have engaged in rich learning opportunities, co-curricular activities and community projects that reflect both their talents and their values.

A particular highlight in recent weeks has been the announcement that BMG Woodlea has been officially classified as a Fighting Extinction School by Zoos Victoria. This recognition is the result of the outstanding work of our Staughton Vale Ambassadors in advocating for the endangered brush-tailed phascogale. Their passion for conservation has not only made a real difference, but has also earned them an invitation to present at the upcoming Zoos Victoria Fighting Extinction Schools Showcase. I would like to thank Ms Nicole Heywood for her leadership of this program and Ms Kimone Stacey-Missen for her support in working alongside Landcare and our Ambassadors. This is a proud moment for BMG and a reminder of the impact our students can have beyond the classroom.

Another major highlight of this term has been the School’s ability to secure additional land alongside our Maddingley Campus. This expansion gives us the rare chance to grow in a location where space is limited and will allow us to plan for new facilities and outdoor areas that benefit both current students and generations to come. It marks an exciting step in the continued growth of the School.

We have recently seen creativity on display in the Performing Arts, strong results in sports and meaningful contributions through Community Service. These milestones highlight the strength of our calm and structured learning environment and the importance of pairing aspiration with support in everything we do.

I am grateful to our dedicated staff for their ongoing efforts and to families for your support and encouragement throughout the term. As we move into the holiday period, I encourage students to rest, recharge and enjoy time with family and friends. For our VCE students, this holiday period is also a vital time to consolidate learning and prepare for upcoming examinations. We wish you well in your preparations.

Looking ahead, Term 4 marks the return of the Summer Uniform. Families are encouraged to take the opportunity over the holiday break to check that uniforms are in order and ready for the warmer months.

On behalf of the School, I wish all our students and their families a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday and I look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 4.

Last week, the school celebrated its outstanding NAPLAN results, an achievement that reflects the hard work of our dedicated staff, committed student body and supportive school community. While these results are indicative of strong academic performance, they are also a testament to the culture of excellence and high standards that permeate every aspect of life at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, Education for Life.

Our Character Education Program is grounded in four core virtues: Civic, Moral, Performance and Academic. These pillars form the foundation of our expectations, holding all members of our community accountable in the pursuit of personal growth, academic achievement and overall positive development.

In striving for excellence, it is natural that questions occasionally arise regarding the standards set by the school. These may relate to uniform, hairstyles, makeup, behaviour or academic expectations. Our Character Education Program equips students to make informed and wise decisions in response to these standards, enabling them to learn essential life lessons and participate in a school environment that nurtures the development of well-rounded, valuable members of society.

We also acknowledge that students may sometimes make poor choices. At this time, it is normal for students to experience a range of emotions such as disappointment, frustration or sadness as part of their personal growth. These feelings and experiences are integral to their character development and, during these times, our programs are designed to guide and support them. They not only help develop resilience and grit, but also cultivate phronesis, the ability to make wise and considered decisions.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar remains committed to upholding standards that reflect our core values. We firmly believe that through this commitment, we not only foster academic excellence, but also develop young people of character. We will continue to support every student in meeting these expectations, confident that this process will produce both outstanding results and flourishing individuals.

A Wonderful Term of Learning

We have had a wonderful term of learning, with students showing the values of ambition, discipline, confidence, kindness, respect and knowledge as they strived to do their best and achieve new goals, whether social, academic, sporting or creative.

Our Values Program, which teachers implement weekly, supports these qualities through class discussions, often linked to mentor texts and knowledge-rich units, helping students make meaningful connections. We encourage all families to continue conversations about the school values at home, as together, we help our students grow into well-rounded individuals.

We also ask families to continue reading with their children over the school break, as regular reading builds confidence, strengthens skills and fosters a lifelong love of learning.

We wish all our students and families a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

Junior Art at Maddingley

During Term 3, students at the Maddingley campus have continued to explore the Elements of Art, with a greater focus on form and texture through a variety of different sculpture and construction activities. They have experimented with a variety of materials to create some impressive three-dimensional works of art.

In Prep, students enjoyed learning about artist Claude Monet and exploring his various artworks. They have been introduced to sculpture techniques such as pinch, pull and coil making by creating snails.

The Year 1 students have enjoyed experimenting with air clay, where they demonstrated their knowledge of techniques such as pinch, pull and coil making to create a mouse pinch pot.

Year 2 students have been introduced to clay and the process that happens when the clay is fired in the kiln. They created their own fish pinch pot sculpture, demonstrating different ways of manipulating and adhering clay such as pinch, pull and scratch and attach.

In Year 3, students have created a clay castle. They have demonstrated how to roll a slab and have used various tools to add texture to their sculptures.

The Year 4 students linked their prior knowledge of Ancient Chinese history to create terracotta warriors. They were able to further develop their skills in attaching the terracotta using the scratch and attach method to ensure all the parts were thoroughly secured. They also experimented with adding texture to their sculptures.

Year 2 Maddingley

During Term 3, our students were immersed in a variety of memorable experiences and enriching activities that sparked both learning and curiosity.

In English, students explored the text Wandi, a powerful story about an alpine dingo’s journey. This study came to life when students were thrilled to welcome Ooti, a real-life dingo from the Dingo Sanctuary. His visit captivated the students and offered a rare opportunity to learn about wildlife up close. They discovered fascinating facts, including that dingos are incredibly flexible, capable of rotating their heads 180 degrees, and possess supersonic hearing—so acute they can hear a human heartbeat from 25 metres away.

Literacy Week was another highlight, filled with engaging activities designed to nurture a love of reading. The week concluded with a vibrant dress-up day where students brought their favourite literary characters to life with imaginative and creative costumes inspired by texts of their choice.

To celebrate Father’s Day, students invited their dads for a heart warming afternoon filled with connection and creativity. The event featured shared games, hands-on craft activities and a literacy session where students read a fluency passage from Wandi, showcasing their reading expression and understanding of sentence structure. The celebration also included an exciting STEM challenge, where students and their dads worked together to design and build a boat using limited materials. This hands-on activity encouraged teamwork, innovation and problem-solving as they tested how well their boats could float and carry weight.

Each of these events contributed to a dynamic and enjoyable Term 3 — rich with learning, creativity, and strong community spirit.

Literacy Week at Woodlea: Book an Adventure!

During Week 7, Woodlea came alive with colour, laughter and the magic of stories as we celebrated Literacy Week with the theme Book an Adventure! The entire campus was buzzing with excitement as students and staff immersed themselves in a range of activities designed to inspire a love of reading and celebrate the joy of books.

The week offered a wonderful blend of experiences for all year levels. Students were captivated by visiting authors who shared their creative journeys and inspired our budding writers to dream big. Quizzes tested our book smarts and challenged students to recall favourite titles, characters and stories, while scavenger and treasure hunts encouraged collaboration and curiosity as students explored the school grounds in search of literary surprises.

Literacy Week also provided opportunities for meaningful connections across sub-schools, with buddy reading sessions allowing younger and older students to share stories together. Our “Meet and Greet” with characters from the Little People, Big Dreams series brought history and biography to life, and classrooms transformed into spaces that celebrated creativity and imagination.

One of the standout days was Harry Potter Day, where Marauder’s Maps led students on magical adventures, and the school was filled with witches, wizards and Hogwarts-inspired fun. Staff and students alike embraced the spirit of the day, proving that reading truly is an adventure.

Thank you to our incredible staff for their creativity and enthusiasm, to our students for their boundless energy and love of learning, and to our families for supporting a week filled with laughter and imagination. Literacy Week reminded us all that books open doors to adventure, and here at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, every day is a chance to turn the page and see where the story leads!

Term 3 – Year 3 Woodlea

Our Year 3 students at Woodlea recently took part in an engaging incursion focused on threatened and endangered species. Through interactive discussions and close-up experiences, students explored the reasons why species become endangered such as habitat loss, climate change and pollution. They also considered the importance of conservation and reflected on actions we can take to protect wildlife, both locally and globally.

The incursion closely supported our classroom learning focus on palm oil farming and its negative impacts on animals at risk of extinction. It encouraged students to develop curiosity, compassion and a sense of responsibility towards the natural world. Many left inspired to think about how small changes in our everyday lives can make a positive difference for animals and their environments.

A Double Triumph for Year 4 at the MAV Games

On Wednesday 10 September, eight of our mathematically talented Year 4 students from the Junior Co-curricular Programme proudly represented Bacchus Marsh Grammar at the MAV Games, held at St. Anne’s. The Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) Games is an inspiring event designed to challenge young mathematicians. Students are encouraged to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills to solve complex problems that require them to think critically, reason effectively and work collaboratively.

For many of our students, this was their very first time participating. Understandably, there was a mixture of excitement and nerves as they prepared to take on the challenge. What was most impressive was their ambition to succeed and the maturity shown in the way they conducted themselves alongside other participating students – approaching both wins and challenges with grace and humility. They demonstrated determination, teamwork and resilience, always carrying themselves with wisdom, knowledge, kindness and respect – the core values of Bacchus Marsh Grammar.

We are delighted to announce that their efforts were well-rewarded with outstanding results. Both of the Year 4 teams placed 1st and 2nd. Their success was underpinned by the discipline and commitment they have shown each week in attending the Mathematics Co-curricular Programme, where they honed their skills and developed a love of problem solving. This is an incredible achievement and a true reflection of their hard work, perseverance and positive spirit.

Congratulations to all eight students for their brilliant performance and for representing our school with such pride. This remarkable achievement not only celebrates the talent and dedication of our current participants, but also serves as an inspiration for future students to embrace the joy of problem solving and critical mathematical thinking through our Mathematics Co-curricular Programme.

Unit 1–2 Modern History Classes Welcome Vietnam Vets to BMG

In Week 7 of Term 3, Woodlea and Maddingley students had the privilege of welcoming seven volunteers from the Vietnam Veterans Association’s West Melbourne Sub-Branch to our Maddingley Campus.

As part of the Unit 1–2 Modern History study, students have been exploring the causes, course and consequences of the Cold War. Within this study, they have been assessing the significance of the Vietnam War within the broader context of the late 20th century. VCE students from both Maddingley and Woodlea were given the opportunity to interview and converse with our brilliant volunteers and were very excited to delve into the realities of the conflict and its lasting legacy.

Students posed some fantastic inquiries, asking mature and poignant questions regarding the veterans’ experiences in the conflict. As a cohort, they learned from our volunteers about the different ways in which they were conscripted, their awareness of the Vietnam War within the broader Cold War context, and more personal aspects of their service—such as how they celebrated Christmas and birthdays. As a faculty, we were grateful to have welcomed veterans with such vast experiences, including representatives from the Australian Army, Australian Air Force, Royal Australian Navy, New Zealand Army and US Navy.

This was a fantastic morning enjoyed by all, and one in which students were able to maturely engage with the realities of the Vietnam War through their inquisitive historical inquiries. I am delighted to share that one veteran remarked upon how our students showcased a “mature, intelligent and courteous approach to history.”

On behalf of the school, I would like to extend my gratitude to our volunteers from the Vietnam Veterans Association’s West Melbourne Sub-Branch for providing their time, stories and experiences to give our students valuable insight into the Vietnam War. I would also like to thank the BMG Events Team for their assistance in organising a delicious morning tea, and the Maintenance Team for ensuring a safe pick-up and drop-off for our guests.

We look forward to welcoming our Vietnam War Veterans back next year.

Mr Joshua Armstrong – Teacher

The excursion to Maddingley with the Vietnam Vets was a very insightful experience that gave me a deeper understanding of both the war itself and the personal impact it had on those who served. One moment that stood out to me was when a veteran described going on six-week operations in the jungle, where they had no opportunity to shower or shave and even had to sleep standing up against trees. Hearing experiences like this made the challenges of the war feel much more real. The veterans also spoke in depth about ideas such as the domino theory, which directly linked to our class content and helped me connect what we’ve been learning in the classroom to the lived experiences of those who were there.

Pre-VCE Environmental Science visit Barwon Heads

On Wednesday 3 September, a group of thirty Maddingley and Woodlea students from Pre-VCE Environmental Science recently travelled to Barwon Heads to investigate and compare the rocky shore habitats of Victoria’s coast. Students began with a background study of rocky shore ecology and tidal movements, learning how these ever-changing environments shape plant and animal communities. They then participated in a guided field survey, using transects and quadrats to systematically document the distribution of organisms from high tide to low tide, directly connecting theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world experience.

During the excursion, the group discussed the specialised adaptations that enable local animals and plants to withstand exposure and rapid environmental change. This fieldwork not only provided insight into coastal biodiversity, but also laid a strong foundation for the students’ own future design investigations in Environmental Science.

10F Service Leadership – Mindful Colouring in the Hive!

As part of our Service Leadership initiative, 10F had the wonderful opportunity to run a Mindful Colouring session for Junior School students in the Hive.  It was a relaxed and joyful experience where students could take a break from their busy days and enjoy some creative, calming time together.  The Junior School students eagerly joined us, picking out colouring sheets and diving into their artwork with focus and enthusiasm.  It was great to see how something as simple as colouring could bring smiles and spark conversation.

For us in 10F, running this session was both fun and rewarding.  We loved connecting with the younger students and creating a space where they could unwind and express themselves.  It reminded us of the importance of mindfulness and taking time out to slow down.

10F Students

Year 10 Inspire Program

As part of the Year 10 Inspire Program, students at the Maddingley Campus have been given the opportunity to strengthen their Service Leadership skills while contributing to a meaningful cause. This year, 10E is proud to support the ‘300 Blankets’ initiative, an organisation dedicated to providing warmth, comfort and dignity to people experiencing homelessness.

Our Year 10 fundraising program centred on collecting donations such as blankets, toiletries and anything else that could’ve supported people in need. Students, staff, and families were encouraged to contribute either through donating blankets directly or by supporting fundraising efforts that will go towards purchasing them. We were astounded to find donations that filled up to two wheelie bins and we thank everyone who gave up their time and money for our charity event. Every blanket donated represented more than just warmth, it symbolised care, community and hope for those still having it tough.

Through this initiative, we not only learnt the value of service leadership but also recognised the impact small, collective actions can have on the wider community. This was a valuable opportunity for us to come together, show compassion and make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

We look forward to seeing the rest of the community continue through with this program, ensuring we can spread both warmth and kindness across Victoria to those who need it most.

Zazzle Genetics Practical – Pre-VCE Biology Year 9 and 10 Science Elective

In our Pre VCE Biology Year 9 elective class, we have been learning about cell structure, respiration, photosynthesis and genetics. To deepen our understanding of genetic transfer between two parents and its offspring, we performed a practical called the Zazzle genetics practical where we investigated how alleles (variants of a gene) can produce dominant or recessive traits (eg. straight or curly hair). Within the experiment we flipped counters that represented dominant and recessive traits to create our own creature (offspring) called a zazzle. We worked in pairs and thoroughly enjoyed embodying the process of genetic transfer by using play dough, counters, pipe cleaners and toothpicks to make our own zazzles.

Through this experiment I was able to see how the genetic transfer between parents and offspring, amongst an abundance of offsprings, resulting from alleles producing dominant and recessive traits, is affected by the probability of them, especially when dominant traits “mask” or present their phenotype over the recessive trait whenever they are within the genotype. Therefore, dominant traits are more likely to present their phenotype for that certain organism, as seen when we compared all of our zazzle creations and observed how mine was the only zazzle with the recessive trait; short antennae, while everyone else had the dominant trait; long antennae.

Ultimately, this practical broadened and reinforced my understanding of genetic transfer, alleles and dominant and recessive traits, allowing me to relate back to real life situations, making me wonder about all the possibilities and complexities of this topic.

Aqsa A – 9WB

Teachers Notes

Aqsa’s reflections accurately described the overall learning outcomes from this activity, which strengthened the students’ ability to grasp the abstract concepts related to genetic inheritance in a concrete manner. Further to the “academic” aspect of the activity, the lesson was intentionally designed to align with key points from our school’s philosophy and to provide opportunities for Character education and development:

1. A School that Values the Individual

  • Students were given the opportunity to engage in the activity with their own interpretation of what the traits in the “Zazzles” would look like, tapping on their unique personal creativity.
  • The activity further reinforced how each students’ genetic traits that were inherited from their parents are a unique combination to them only, that they are each a unique and valued individual.

2. A Calm Structured School

  • The calm, friendly and purposeful environment enabled students to exercise their creativity in a structured manner, all while having fun creating their “Zazzles”.

3. Enjoyment and Enthusiasm

  • The activity provided students with an opportunity to strengthen their skills in genetics and provided both excitement and challenge.
  • The teacher-student conversations we had when reflecting on the completed activity provided much evidence for their enthusiasm for Biology as well as their motivation to see how this activity applied to contexts beyond school.

R U OK? Day at Bacchus Marsh Grammar

On Thursday 11 September, students across both campuses came together during Tutor Group time to take part in R U OK? Day activities. The focus of the day was on encouraging students to recognise when they might need support and to understand how to seek help.

At Woodlea, Year 11 students visited the Year 6 cohort to lead an engaging game of “emotions charades.” Through the activity, students explored how different emotions can present physically and discussed practical strategies for managing feelings when things don’t feel okay. The Year 11s also stepped into leadership roles, showing the Year 6s that they are approachable mentors, while also reminding them of the many trusted adults and peers they can turn to when in need.

Across both campuses, activities encouraged students to connect, share, and support one another. These experiences not only promote positive wellbeing but also help to strengthen bonds between year levels, creating a culture where looking out for one another is part of everyday school life.

Herald Sun Shield – Senior Boys

For the first time in the school’s history, our BMG Senior Boys team qualified for the prestigious Herald Sun Shield competition which was held Tuesday 9 September. This milestone marks an exciting step forward for our sporting program and provided a valuable opportunity for our students to test themselves against some of the strongest school teams in Victoria.

Across the day, the boys competed in four games, showing determination, teamwork and resilience in every match. Despite not recording a win, they played with great spirit and pride. The highlight came in a thrilling contest against Overnewton College, where the boys fell agonisingly short in a 1-point loss – a match that could have gone either way and kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

What made the team’s effort even more commendable was their performance while being four players short, forcing the group to dig deep and support one another throughout the tournament. Their perseverance and commitment to representing BMG with pride was evident in every game.

On behalf of the BMG community, we congratulate the Senior Boys on this historic achievement; their efforts are a credit to themselves and the school.

A special thank you goes to Coach, Mr Velden, for all the time and effort he has dedicated to the Senior Boys team.

Herald Sun Shield – Senior Girls

Our Senior Girls AFL team recently represented BMG in the prestigious Herald Sun Shield competition which was held on Thursday 4 September, an achievement in itself that highlights the talent and dedication of our students.

The team played two tough matches across the day, coming up against strong opposition. While we were unable to secure a win, the girls gave their all in every contest, demonstrating resilience, teamwork and determination from start to finish. Their efforts on the field reflected the values of hard work and sportsmanship that we are proud to see in our school teams.

A special thank you goes to Coaches, Mrs Garner and Ms Brown, for their time, effort and guidance in leading the team throughout the season.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar Interschool Show Jumping Competition – Season Finale at Bacchus Marsh Pony Club

While some of us rest over the upcoming term break, we turn our attention to Nationals, where Jasmine will be flying the BMG flag and riding for Victoria in the Show Jumping Team. We look forward to hearing all about it!

Congratulations to all riders for an excellent finish to the season, and thank you to the families, volunteers and supporters who helped make the day a success.

Helping Hands at Horse Shepherd

Continuing our commitment to Horse Shepherd, members of our Equestrian Club recently visited the sanctuary to lend a helping hand.

Students enjoyed reconnecting with the residents, including checking in on our sponsored pony, Frodo. The group worked diligently clearing a paddock of fallen sticks and debris, tidying up around the stables and meeting some of the new residents currently undergoing rehabilitation.

A highlight of the day was touring the rehabilitation centre which features a water treadmill. This initiative is part of Horse Shepherd’s efforts to become a more self-sufficient sanctuary, helping to raise vital funds for veterinary care and feed costs.

Volunteering at Horse Shepherd is a valued part of the Equestrian Club’s co-curricular program, fostering teamwork, responsibility and community spirit. We look forward to continuing this commitment and returning in Term 4 to lend a hand once again.

SRC Leaders Day

Last week, the SRC members came together to take part in the SRC Leaders Day. This day was dedicated to learning about what it really means to be a leader. From the moment we arrived, the day was packed with fun activities, group challenges, and meaningful discussions that helped us grow as SRC representatives. After roll call and a quick ride to Staughton Vale, we kicked off the day with a safety briefing and a snack to fuel up.

Afterwards came one of the best parts – team-building games! We played Human Bingo, Tug of War, the Magic Tarp Challenge, and even a tricky memory game. These activities helped us work together, communicate and build trust with students we hadn’t met before. In addition, we gathered in the main hall for a reflection session. We talked about what it means to be a part of the SRC, shared ideas for improving our school, and discussed the rules and responsibilities of being a student leader. Hearing speeches from the SRC leaders was inspiring; they reminded us that leadership is about listening, helping others, and standing up for what’s right.

In the problem-solving session, we worked in groups to come up with solutions to real school problems. It was great to hear different opinions and to think creatively about how to make school life better. After lunch, we took part in a Project Design Challenge, where we created proposals for Term 4 projects focused on things such as sustainability, wellbeing and school culture. But the most exciting moment of the day was at the end, getting our SRC badges.

It felt amazing to be recognised as a leader. Standing with our peers, smiling for photos  and holding our badges made us feel proud of everything we’d learned and achieved. Overall, SRC Leaders Day was more than just a fun event, it was a chance to grow, connect, and take real steps towards making our school a better place.
