FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Read Time: ( words)

We’re now well into Term 2, and it’s been fantastic to see students settling back into routines and continuing to build on the strong foundations set in Term 1.

Term 1 was exceptionally busy, filled with new beginnings, numerous events and significant academic and personal achievements for our students. This term, our younger students will be encouraged to extend their learning through targeted activities designed to inspire curiosity and growth. For students in Years 7 to 11, attention will increasingly shift towards preparation for their mid-year examinations.
To our parents of Year 12 students, thank you for the ongoing support you are providing your child to navigate such an important year. Our Year 12 students will be finalising their Unit 3 content in the coming weeks as we make the halfway point for their final year.
All parents are reminded we are committed to providing guidance and support to ensure your child’s success. Please continue open communication with your child’s Tutor Group/classroom teachers and reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 4, and Middle School students who have participated in their Cross-Country events at our Staughton Vale Campus. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces, bright House colours and positive House spirit. I would also like to thank the parents who made the time to visit the site, support their child and learn more about the site.
Wishing you all the best for a positive term.

Maddingley Main Car Park

Students arriving or departing Maddingley Campus at the beginning and end of the school day should do so only via the Gatehouse (Main Car Park) or for those travelling on buses, via the Bus Turnaround. We remind parents and students that there is no drop off or pick up on South Maddingley Road.
In the Main Car Park there are dedicated zones designed for quick drop off or pick up and these areas are not to be used for extended parking.
These parking conditions, which are not onerous, are designed for the safety of students and ease of access for all. We ask parents to be patient and mindful of their behaviours in the car park.

THE PODIUM

Read Time: ( words)

Welcome back to Term 2

I hope everyone had a restful and safe break and that everyone is refreshed for a productive second term. Whilst researching an article for the Podium this week I came across an interesting piece on returning to school and Four Tips to make the transition from our holidays easier. If you will indulge me, here are the tips for students returning to school:

1/ Review Your Expectations
I always considered the first day back from a holiday break to be just like the first day of school. You will want to review your expectations and procedures. Go over your study schedule. Think about what worked and what didn’t in Semester One. Continue to Strive for the STARS.

2/ Be structured
Students, like us, have been on holidays where their days have begun with “sleep ins” and “do what may”. It is time to get back to structure. Make sure you are well planned and prepared. Make sure that your study cards and revision notes are up to date, and you are going into each lesson with a clear learning goal and intention.

3/ Be Positive and Confident
Remember to be positive and confident. You are where you are because of all the hard work you have put in. You are great students and continue showing this through your actions.

4/ Have a Plan for Stress Management
Upon returning, have a plan for how you are going to handle the stress of school. Most importantly, set up a structured sleep routine. This is the one area that will make the most difference. Make sure you eat well and take time to exercise and read.

I hope everyone has a great start to Term 2 and I look forward to chatting to students and parents as the year continues.

Mr Andrew Perks – Deputy Principal: Culture and Character Education

Junior School News

As we continue deep into the learning of 2025, we remind families that strong attendance is essential for both academic progress and social development. Every day of school matters, particularly in this important term when students are being assessed and academic reports are being finalised.
In addition to classroom learning, community events such as Mother’s Day celebrations and Cultural Week across both campuses have provided valuable opportunities for students to share their family stories, explore their heritage and develop a deeper understanding of others. These events play a key role in fostering two of our core school values—respect and kindness—by encouraging empathy, connection and a sense of belonging within our school community.
We thank families for their support in maintaining regular attendance and engaging in these meaningful experiences.

Year 4 GRIP Leadership

On Wednesday 30 April, our Year 4 student leaders from both the Maddingley and Woodlea campuses had the exciting opportunity to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference held at Federation University in Ballarat. This engaging and inspiring event brought together young leaders from across the region to explore the key values and skills required for effective leadership.
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of lectures, interactive games and collaborative activities that deepened their understanding of leadership. They explored the concept of leading through service, reflected on the qualities that make a great leader, and considered how they can be positive role models within their school communities.
Our students represented the school with pride, demonstrating excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and maturity. They confidently engaged with students from other schools, making meaningful connections and developing their networking and interpersonal skills. It was a valuable experience that encouraged our young leaders to think critically about their role and the impact they can have on others.

Junior Art

It has been an exciting start to Term 2 in Art in the Maddingley Junior School. Students from Prep to Year 4 have created some amazing Art pieces with a focus on Paint and Printing, experimenting with acrylic, ink wash and watercolour paints.
Students in Prep have been introduced to a range of different line and brush techniques and have enjoyed applying these techniques to their work to create some beautiful art pieces including a self-portrait and a beautiful watercolour butterfly.
The Year 1 students have recently been looking at self-portraits using black oil pastels and then painting over the top of them using ink wash to watch the resistance that occurs.
In Year 2, students have been consolidating their knowledge of the colour wheel and have demonstrated their understanding of primary, secondary and complimentary colours through their works of Art.
Our Year 3 students have been learning about double loading painting techniques and inspired by Vincent van Gogh have been painting their own version of The Starry Night.
Students in Year 4 have enjoyed discussing the still-life paintings of artists such as Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne, using the work of these artists as inspiration to create their own still-life watercolour fruit bowl.
Junior School students at Maddingley have enjoyed admiring the work of their peers through regular gallery walks.

Mother’s Day Craft Afternoon

What a beautiful afternoon we shared in Junior School as we welcomed mums, grandmas, aunties and the special women in our students’ lives to join us for a creative and joy-filled craft session. The room was buzzing with laughter, conversation and heartfelt connections as students and their loved ones created special keepsakes together.
This event was a wonderful celebration of the important role women play in our lives and the strength of the connections within our school community. We hope you had a memorable Mother’s Day and enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did.
Thank you for being a part of this special day.

Mrs Sally Savic – Head of Junior School: Woodlea

Year 2

This term, our creative Year 2 students have been busy writing procedures – with a very special twist! As part of their writing unit, they explored the structure of a procedure including a title, goal, ingredients, steps and a personal comment. To celebrate Mother’s Day, the students wrote delightful procedures on How to Make a Mum Just Like Ours. From “2 cups of love” to “3 spoons of hugs and kisses” and “1 handful of fun”, their thoughtful and imaginative writing was a wonderful way to show appreciation for the amazing mums in their lives. The highlight was when students proudly shared their writing with their mums during our Mother’s Day celebrations – a touching moment full of smiles, laughter and love.

Ms Ashlee Taylor – Head of Year 2

Junior Art

Prep students have started Term 2 by exploring the autumn season through a vibrant painting and printing activity. They used various tools and techniques to create textured autumn-inspired artworks.
Following that, students created beautiful flower collages inspired by the book The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, combining paper cutting and layering skills to bring their flowers to life.
Next, the Preps will dive into the world of Impressionism by creating an artwork based on Claude Monet’s Japanese Footbridge, exploring colour blending and brushwork to reflect Monet’s iconic style.
The Year 1 students have started Term 2 by exploring underwater themes. They began with a soft fish sculpture, developing their skills in texture and form. They also created a striking collage of an X-ray fish, inspired by First Nations’ fish artworks, thereby learning about patterns.
The Year 2 students kicked off the term by looking closely at Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh. They explored his expressive brushstrokes and vibrant use of colour, and then created their own painted sunflower artworks inspired by his iconic style.
Year 3 students have begun an exciting Elements of Art project that will span the entire term. Each week, they will explore a different element—line, shape, form, space, value, texture and colour—through hands-on art activities. This project will help students build a strong foundation in visual arts while experimenting with a variety of materials and techniques.
Year 4 students have started the term working with air-drying clay to create detailed turtle sculptures. This activity allowed them to explore form, texture and three-dimensional art making. In addition, they’ve been developing their drawing skills through a dragon-themed artwork, focusing on the element of line, using detail and creativity.
Students from Prep to Year 4 have also had the opportunity to extend their creativity by participating in lunchtime art sessions. These co-curricular sessions provide a relaxed and supportive space for students to continue developing their art skills and express themselves through a variety of materials and techniques.
We’re excited about all the creativity Term 2 will bring!

Year 8 Camp – Student Reflections

In Week 3, a large group of Year 8 students went on a hiking camp in the Brisbane Ranges. Over the week, we did activities such as high ropes, watched an animal show, rock climbing and hiking. One of my personal highlights of the camp was being able to touch animals during the animal show; I even got the chance to hold a snake!
On the first night we cooked our own dinner on the Trangia. It was fun until we had to clean and dry our Trangia’s, which took us all some time until it was perfect and up to standard. During the hiking, some groups had to hike a very steep and rocky hill – which was a challenge for all of us.
Overall, we had a great time, lots of laughs and great memories.
A big thank you to the staff from YMCA and our teachers who came and helped throughout this camp; we really appreciate your help and support.
Ruby R (8E)

During the Creswick Bike Challenge Camp we completed several bike trails and challenges including long rides, hills, and uneven surfaces, and very long distances. Some of the highlights of the camp were the playing around at the pump track, where we rode beams and cleared jumps. It was great seeing each other improve their skills of mountain biking and general camping.
One of the biggest challenges that all students and teachers had to overcome was the cold and the large hills that we had to climb. We could tell that we had overcome these challenges as by the last day we were riding uphill at a faster pace than the first day. To overcome the cold, we all put on gloves and more layers of clothes – and gathered around the fire. Another enjoyable part of camp was cooking our dinner each night. On the first night we had to bring our own choice of camping food. Most of us cooked different types of pasta or rice. I cooked a carbonara dish made from a packet of pasta carbonara, long-life milk and butter – it was surprisingly good. To cook our food, we used Trangia’s (small stove pots made for camping). This was a fun and challenging experience as we had to make all of our dinner from scratch.
The whole camp wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our YMCA staff and our teachers. I would like to thank them for their help and making our camp a lot more fun and easy.

Student Achievement

We are thrilled to share the exciting news that Sumishka B from Year 7WB was recently selected to participate in the prestigious 2025 Young Women in Aerospace & Defence Program, a four-day STEM initiative hosted by RMIT University.
Throughout this unique opportunity, Sumishka embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and curiosity. She delved into the fundamentals of coding with Python, assembled a fully functional satellite, and programmed it to collect various scientific measurements. As part of the program’s final challenge, she attached her satellite to a drone and successfully carried out a simulated real-world mission, capturing live data in a highly authentic learning environment.
The program concluded with a competition and interview round, where Sumishka’s dedication and innovation truly shone. She proudly secured 3rd place overall and was awarded a trophy in recognition of her outstanding efforts.
We are incredibly proud of Sumishka’s achievements and can’t wait to see how her passion for STEM continues to flourish in the years ahead. Congratulations, Sumishka!

Tour of Hope

Bacchus Marsh Grammar was proud to host the inspiring Tour of Hope on 13 May at both campuses, welcoming a team of elite footballers and role models who delivered an unforgettable experience of learning, inspiration and sport. Attended by Tour of Hope ambassadors – Brazilian footballers: Mineiro, Fabio, Kelly, Marcinho, Silas and Xandao.
The day began with a warm welcome and introduction, setting the tone for what would be a powerful experience. Students were introduced to the Tour of Hope ambassadors, former professional footballers who have competed on the world stage and are now committed to giving back through their message of hope, resilience and determination.
In the Q&A session, students had the rare opportunity to ask the ambassadors questions about their professional journeys, the importance of perseverance, and their personal experiences in overcoming adversity both on and off the field. Their stories offered valuable life lessons and reinforced the power of hard work and a positive mindset.
Next, students laced up their boots and took to the field for a soccer skills workshop, where they practised ball control, passing, and teamwork. Guided by the ambassadors, the workshop was not just about improving technique, but also about building confidence and camaraderie.
The energy stayed high as students took part in a mini-match, playing small-sided games that allowed them to showcase their skills in a friendly, supportive environment. Laughter, encouragement and team spirit were on full display as students embraced the joy of the game.
The Tour of Hope was more than just a sports clinic, it was a celebration of character, ambition and resilience. We are so grateful to the Tour of Hope team, Coach Mineiro and Beram Kumar from Aintree Soccer Club for making this day possible. It was a day our students will not soon forget.
