As we reach the end of Term 1, I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the sustained efforts of our students and staff across what has been a purposeful and productive start to the year. Classrooms have remained calm, structured and focused, with explicit teaching continuing to underpin every lesson. It has been pleasing to see students approach their learning with increasing confidence, engagement and a willingness to challenge themselves.

This term has also seen strong student success both within and beyond the classroom. Students have adapted positively to the revised timetable structure and enrichment program, embracing new opportunities to broaden their skills and interests. It has been particularly encouraging to see the enthusiasm with which students have engaged in these programs, alongside continued success in sport, participation in camps and visits to Staughton Vale. These experiences play an important role in developing well-rounded young people and strengthening their connection to the school.

A significant highlight of this term has been Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s recognition as a Middle Years’ School of Excellence (MYSOE). This is an outstanding achievement and reflects the development of our Middle Years program, the quality of teaching and the deliberate structures we have in place to support student learning and development during these important years of schooling.

This recognition is the result of a substantial body of work and I would like to acknowledge and thank all Middle School staff who contributed to the process. In particular, I wish to recognise the leadership of Mrs Sarah Hunter, Deputy Head of Woodlea Campus, whose work in coordinating and guiding this submission was instrumental.

I thank our families for their ongoing support throughout the term and wish all members of our community a safe and enjoyable Easter, and a restful term break.

The Importance of Celebration in the Teaching of Character and Virtue

This week marks the celebrations of both Easter and Pesach (Passover). Celebrations such as these are especially powerful and meaningful in the teaching of character and virtue, as they bring together story, ritual, community and reflection. These are key elements in moral formation and character education, as they do not simply tell people what values matter, they actively embody them.

Celebrations communicate powerful narratives to our communities. Throughout history, these narratives have played a significant role in teaching character, moral understanding and virtuous behaviour through storytelling, parables and religious texts. They provide guidance on how to behave, make informed decisions, exercise wisdom, and flourish within our communities. Both of these celebrations are rooted in foundational stories which help make abstract virtues more concrete. By reading and engaging with these stories, we are not only taught values such as respect, courage, hope, justice and perseverance, we also encounter lived examples of these virtues in action.

Celebrations are inherently communal. They provide opportunities to connect with a moral community, where families gather, share meals and sustain traditions that strengthen bonds across generations. This dimension of character and moral education is particularly powerful because it is experienced collectively, rather than in isolation. It fosters a sense of belonging, reinforces responsibility to others and promotes empathy and a shared identity.

As we break for the Easter holiday period, I wish everyone a happy and safe Easter. May this time be one of joy, rest and meaningful connection with family and community.

MIDDLE YEARS SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD

Bacchus Marsh Grammar is proud to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Middle Years’ School of Excellence (MYSOE) by leading Middle Years Education Specialists, Adolescent Success. This recognition places BMG among a select group of schools acknowledged for their outstanding commitment to the education and wellbeing of students across the middle years. It is also the first time that a Victorian school has been acknowledged with this award.

As part of this achievement, BMG will undertake a three-year tenure as a MYSOE school with Adolescent Success. This position will focus on the continued development of our middle years staff through targeted professional learning, mentorship opportunities, and collaboration with leading practitioners in the field. The program is designed to further strengthen our capacity to deliver high-quality, evidence-based middle years education across the school.

The award process was both rigorous and comprehensive. Staff were required to complete a detailed written submission showcasing our programs, curriculum design, and school-wide practices, followed by a formal interview process. Successfully meeting these criteria is a significant accomplishment and reflects the depth of expertise and dedication within our team.

This recognition is a testament to the strength of our middle years’ programs, the quality of our teaching and learning, and our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. Most importantly, it highlights our focus on creating an environment where every student is supported to grow, engage and thrive during these critical years of development.

We look forward to the opportunities this partnership will bring and to continuing to build an exceptional middle years’ experience for all BMG students.

A Wonderful Start to the Year in Junior School

What a productive and rewarding first term it has been in Junior School!

Term 1 has offered a wide range of enriching experiences and it has been pleasing to see so many parents actively participating in information sessions, workshops and events that support their child’s learning. Parent-teacher interviews also provided valuable opportunities for families to gain insight into both academic progress and social development.

From assemblies and incursions to excursions, sporting events and Staughton Vale trips, our students have embraced each opportunity to extend their learning, build connections and take pride in being part of the Bacchus Marsh Grammar community.
We thank our students for their enthusiasm and commitment to our school values, our dedicated teachers for their ongoing support and guidance and our parents for encouraging a love of learning at home.

As we approach the holiday break, we encourage students to continue reinforcing the concepts explored throughout Term 1. The Family Engagement pages provide a range of ideas to support meaningful learning at home. We also encourage families to make use of the holiday reading packs, as reading together not only strengthens literacy skills but also creates valuable shared experiences.

Uniform Reminder
For Terms 2 and 3, students are required to wear the full school uniform in accordance with the School Uniform and Dress Code Policy. Please refer to the Student Diary (pp. 10–12) for full details.

During the holiday period, families are asked to check that all uniform items fit correctly for the start of Term 2. We also encourage families to review the policy to ensure all requirements are met.

Junior School House Day: Kindness in Action

On Thursday 27 March, students in the Junior School enthusiastically participated in our first House Day of the year, centred on the important school value of kindness. Throughout the day, students engaged in a range of meaningful and interactive activities designed to deepen their understanding of what it means to be kind.

Students explored questions such as what makes someone kind, why kindness is important, and how acts of kindness can positively impact others. Across all year levels, there was a strong focus on empathy, respect and building positive relationships within our school community.

It was wonderful to see students demonstrating kindness in action, whether through collaborative tasks, thoughtful discussions, or small but meaningful gestures towards their peers. The day provided a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on how they can contribute to a caring and inclusive environment, both in the classroom and beyond.

We are incredibly proud of the way our Junior School students embraced the spirit of the day and look forward to seeing these acts of kindness continue throughout the term.

Year 4 Highlight

It has been a busy and exciting first term for the Year 4 students at Woodlea. In the first week of school, students played an important role in supporting their Prep buddies, showing them around the school, eating lunch with them and ensuring they felt included and supported.

In Global Studies, students learnt about government, supported by the Democracy and Me incursion. This provided valuable insight into how democracy operates in Australia and how decisions are made within our community. Students participated in a mock election, experiencing the voting process firsthand and learning how individual voices contribute to collective decision-making through a council meeting.

Cross Country was another highlight, with students completing a 2km course at Staughton Vale. They demonstrated great resilience and determination, along with excellent sportsmanship, cheering on and encouraging one another throughout the race.

We look forward to more engaging learning experiences in Term 2.

GRIP Leadership Conference

On Thursday 26 March, the Year 4 Leaders at Woodlea attended the GRIP Student Leadership Conference which focused on developing their skills and understanding of leadership.

Throughout the day, students participated in a range of sessions exploring what effective leaders do, the importance of integrity and how to develop and implement new ideas within their school and wider community. They learnt to serve others, model school values, take responsibility for their actions and ensure their words align with their behaviour.

Students also considered the challenges involved in bringing new ideas to life, including seeking approval and working through competing priorities. There were valuable opportunities to collaborate with students from other schools and share ideas, as well as take part in engaging activities between sessions.

Prep Reception – Visit to Maddingley BMG Café

As part of our “C” week learning in Prep Reception, students visited the Maddingley BMG Community Café. We were warmly welcomed by the Year 11 Hospitality students who hosted a delicious cookie and hot chocolate morning tea. Students practised their manners and school values during a formal seating experience, ordering their own food and engaging confidently with their hosts. The friendly atmosphere made us feel very welcome and we were proud of how respectfully and responsibly our Prep Reception students embraced the learning opportunity.

During our visit, students used their own handmade colourful keep cups. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with older students who we now proudly call our friends. We look forward to seeing them around the school and visiting the café again in the future—our Prep Reception students are already checking the calendar and asking when we can go back!

Maddingley Year 3 Highlight

On Friday 27 March, the Year 3 students gathered for a Wind in the Willows themed picnic to celebrate a fantastic term of learning following the adventures of Rat, Mole, Badger and Toad. Each student donned a mask of their favourite The Wind in the Willows character and enjoyed a picnic lunch on the basketball court.

Amidst laughter and excitement, students braved the weather with their masks and discussed their favourite chapters of the books with their fellow characters. It was a fantastic afternoon filled with fun and friendship.

Congratulations to our Year 3 students who have engaged so enthusiastically in The Wind in the Willows unit this term.

Assembly Highlights

Our school assemblies are more than just a gathering; they are a vital part of student development, providing a platform to build leadership, confidence and a shared sense of responsibility.

• Languages & Cultural Leaders shared a powerful message on the virtue of Civility. By encouraging respectful communication and kindness, our leaders are helping to foster a positive school culture where every student feels valued. This is essential for building a community based on mutual respect.

• Juliet S performed a sophisticated jazz piece. Such performances are crucial for developing public speaking and performance skills, while also reinforcing the value of creativity and the importance of having the confidence to share one’s talents with others.

• Mr Perks encouraged students to sign up for Term 2 sports. This is a vital reminder of the role physical health plays in overall wellbeing, as well as the importance of teamwork and fulfilling long-term commitments to a group or team.

• Environment Leaders reminded us all of our duty to care for the school environment. These updates teach our students the importance of stewardship and individual responsibility, ensuring we all contribute to a sustainable and clean learning space.

• Mr Bayne shared details about the upcoming Athletics Carnival. Beyond the competition, this event is about building school spirit, encouraging every student to participate and setting personal challenges to strive for excellence.

Year 6 Camp to Canberra

Year 6 Woodlea students recently travelled to Canberra where they visited a range of significant national sites including the Museum of Australian Democracy, The Australian Mint, Parliament House, Mount Ainslie, Questacon, the National Capital Authority, the National Film and Sound Archive and the Australian War Memorial.

Evening activities included visits to the AIS, as well as bowling and orienteering, providing students with opportunities for both recreation and team building.

Recently, myself and my fellow Year 6s went on a trip to Canberra. It was an exciting trip with us going to Questacon, the AIS, Parliament House and more. Personally, I had lots of fun!

On Tuesday, we visited the Museum of Australian Democracy (MOAD), where we learned about Australia’s parliamentary history and important figures such as Edmund Barton. We then went to the Royal Australian Mint to see how Australian coins are made. Later, we visited the House of Representatives to learn how Australia’s democracy works. That night, we went to the AIS where we watched athletes training and played interactive games at Sportex.

The next day, we visited Parliament House for hands-on learning about the Senate and House of Representatives, and then went to Government House, where the Governor-General lives. After lunch, we visited Deep Space Canberra and learned about the large radio antennas used to communicate with spacecraft like the Voyager missions. That night, we got to go to Zone Bowling which was so much fun, but we were all exhausted after the big day.

On our final full day, we visited the Australian War Memorial where we paid our respects to fallen soldiers and visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We then went to the National Capital Authority to learn why Canberra was chosen as Australia’s capital. We also visited Questacon and the National Film and Sound Archive. After dinner, we did orienteering and a scavenger hunt.

On Friday, we left on the bus at 7 AM. Having driven for over 9 hours, we were exhausted but happy to be at home after a long, tiring and fun week learning and doing new things.

2026 Woodlea Middle School Leaders Evening

On Monday 30 March, the Woodlea Middle School were proud to celebrate our young leaders through the 2026 Leaders Evening. This night is always an eagerly anticipated occasion on the school calendar and marks the culmination of over six months of dedicated work by our 2026 Leadership Cohort.

The evening brought together our Year 6 and Year 8 Leaders to be formally recognised for a journey that began with a written application and interview process, progressed through appointment and was shaped by rich, purposeful development experiences along the way. Central to this journey has been the cohort’s work with Mr Darren Pereira of Success Integrated, whose continued partnership with our school has played a meaningful role in cultivating the service leader mindset at the heart of our program, alongside dedicated Leadership Enrichment sessions designed and led by Mrs Melissa Dunat and Ms Krystal Pitt.

As ever, the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the student speeches; thoughtful, considered and genuinely moving reflections on the privilege of leadership and each student’s commitment to using their role in service of the broader school community. It was a powerful reminder of the calibre of the young people we have named in leadership roles.

The evening concluded with the formal presentation of leaders, the presentation of their certificates and blazer badges, a very proud moment for students and families alike.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this night possible: Mr Pereira for his ongoing partnership and investment in our students; the parents and families who attended in support of this special occasion; the School Leadership, Events and Maintenance teams whose behind-the-scenes work ensured a seamless and memorable evening. We thank all teachers who chaperoned groups and Mrs Ogston, Mrs Copeman and Mrs Hunter for their support of the evening’s program and the example they offer to our students.

Pre VCE Physics Road to Zero Excursion

Recently, the Pre VCE Physics students at Maddingley and Woodlea travelled to the Melbourne Museum to take part in an engaging and interactive learning experience designed to deepen their understanding of motion and forces in relation to driving or being a passenger in a vehicle and how to best survive vehicle accidents.

Throughout the day, students participated in hands-on activities and explored museum exhibits that brought key scientific concepts to life. They investigated how forces influence the movement of vehicles, how energy is transferred on the road and the people in a car, and why these principles are essential for keeping all road users safe.

The museum’s interactive learning spaces allowed students to test ideas and observe scientific principles in action. By examining the physics behind everyday transport, students strengthened their understanding of how motion and forces shape the way we travel, from the acceleration of a bicycle to the braking distance of a car.

The excursion proved to be both educational and memorable for students, enhancing their knowledge of physics and safety in the world around them.

VCE Hospitality Excursions

On 19 March, the Year 12 Hospitality class were hosted by The Plough in Myrniong to conduct their sensory evaluation assessment for SAT 1. Students were treated to a 5-course degustation menu, carefully curated by head chef and owner Mark Mills.

Mark took the time to explain each of the dishes created and the culinary concepts behind them. He explained the cooking processes they use and the local produce they source, including decadent truffles from Gordon, as well as their nose-to-tail concept of using as much of their meat products as possible.

The students eagerly discussed the interesting flavours, textures, aromas and presentation techniques used in each of the dishes and were pleasantly surprised by the high-quality fine dining experience they received in a small regional town.

Mark and Ruth have graciously hosted this assessment for several years now and we are incredibly appreciative of this real-world learning opportunity for our students.

On 26 March, the Year 11 Hospitality classes were hosted by Craig’s Hotel in Ballarat to participate in a formal High Tea as part of their folio assessment requiring them to organise and host their own High Tea event in Term 2.

Students were treated to a three-tiered tower of decadent petite fours, freshly baked scones, delicate finger sandwiches and mini savouries served alongside their chosen tea. Students engaged with the host, asking questions about the history of Craigs and high teas in general.

Students also gathered as much relevant information as they could in order to adequately plan and design their own high tea experience for the BMG community next term.

Pre VCE Environmental Science Barwon Heads Fieldwork

As part of their Pre-VCE Environmental Science studies, students at Maddingley recently participated in some fieldwork activities designed to enhance their understanding of ecosystem dynamics and scientific investigation techniques.

A key component of the fieldwork was their visit to the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre where students engaged in an in-depth exploration of marine and freshwater environments. Through guided activities, they examined a variety of aquatic organisms and strengthened their knowledge of ecosystem structure and function. The Centre’s specialised facilities provided an excellent platform for students to connect their theoretical learning of ecology and apply this to many real scenarios.

Students also travelled to the Barwon Heads rock platform where they had planned to conduct a field investigation using transect lines and quadrats to analyse the distribution of plant and animal species across different geological surfaces. Although adverse weather conditions prevented the completion of this component, students conducted themselves with commendable respect and maturity throughout the excursion. They were still able to observe the environment and gain an understanding of how fieldwork techniques would be carried out in this type of area.

AROUND THE SCHOOL

NAPLAN 2026

On Monday 23 March, the annual NAPLAN testing for our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students was completed. NAPLAN is a national benchmark assessment that helps provide a snapshot of each student’s strengths, as well as areas for further development across Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language and Numeracy.

Thank you to all our staff who worked hard to prepare students and supported our students throughout the testing period.

We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the wonderful way our students approached the testing period. They were calm, cooperative and demonstrated a strong commitment to doing their best. Despite some technical challenges at the beginning, students showed resilience and maintained a positive attitude throughout.

Importantly, students showed respect for staff facilitating the sessions and for one another, creating a supportive and focused environment. Our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students truly embodied our core values of respect, discipline and kindness, and should be very proud of the way they conducted themselves.

World Art Day

World Art Day celebrates creativity and artistic expression and, this year, students and staff are invited to explore the theme: “The Garden of Expression, Cultivating Community Through Art”.

Students are invited to submit their own artwork by Friday 1 May.

Artworks can be in any medium, 2D or 3D, but no larger than A3.

Artworks are to be dropped off at Main Reception.

Da Vinci Decathlon Regional Competition

On Tuesday 31 March, eight teams from both the Maddingley and Woodlea campuses competed in the highly competitive Da Vinci Decathlon Regional Competition. As always, Bacchus Marsh Grammar students performed exceptionally well, achieving first place in two-year levels and securing second and third place across most others. An impressive six out of the eight teams placed overall in the competition.

Students’ academic abilities, creative thinking, engineering skills, and overall capabilities were rigorously tested through a range of complex and demanding challenges. Students competed in teams of eight across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy. It was truly impressive to see how our students approached these tasks, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills, resilience, effective teamwork and outstanding academic performance throughout the day.

Managing Distressing World News

Given the current frequency of potentially distressing national and global news, it can be difficult to manage how to encourage your child to be informed about current affairs in a healthy way. ReachOut have great resources for managing conversations about this with young people aged 12 – 25 years, and Kids Helpline also has very helpful information for parents of children aged 5 – 25 years on this and other topics. We recommend the Raising Children Network as a great place for parents to visit for information about everything from these difficult conversations to physical activity guides.

Parenting can be challenging, however there is always good information available to parents to assist in navigating how to best support your child’s wellbeing.

Student Achievement: Micah’s Upcoming Radio Performance

Since the age of ten, Micah has garnered numerous accolades at both local and national levels, consistently securing first place in multiple categories at the Geelong and Bendigo Eisteddfods, and earning the title of National Champion at the 2025 Oz School Instrumental Championships.

A dedicated and accomplished pianist, he has presented recitals at notable venues including the Clocktower Centre, the Capital Theatre, and the Ian Potter Southbank Centre. Later this year, he will also compete in the Australian Youth Classical Music Competition, performing alongside some of the nation’s leading emerging musicians. Micah remains committed to sharing his music widely and aspires to continue his artistic development on an international scale.

Most recently, Micah has been invited to perform live-to-air on 3MBS 103.5FM Melbourne as part of The Talent program.

Term 1 Junior School Music

It has been a vibrant and exciting start to the year in the Music room at Woodlea. Students have settled in beautifully and embraced a range of engaging musical experiences. A highlight this term has been the introduction of new classroom instruments including ukuleles, xylophones and metallophones which have brought fresh energy and enthusiasm to the Year 3 and 4 program.

Prep students have enjoyed their introduction to the Music room, exploring a variety of instruments while developing an understanding of beat and rhythm. They have participated in singing activities and begun building confidence in responding to music through movement and sound.

In Year 1, students have continued to build on these foundations, further developing their sense of beat and rhythm through more structured activities. They have explored a wider range of instruments and extended their singing skills, showing their growth in confidence and control.

Year 2 students have had an exciting introduction to the violin this term. They have explored the different parts of the instrument, learned how to hold it correctly and begun producing sound using the bow. Students have focused on developing good posture and control, building confidence as they begin their journey on a string instrument.

Year 3 students have been developing their music theory knowledge alongside practical learning experiences. They have engaged in listening activities, explored musical elements and begun applying their understanding through playing instruments such as the ukulele, xylophones, metallophones and classroom percussion.

In Year 4, students have extended these skills at a more advanced level, deepening their understanding of music theory and listening analysis. They have demonstrated increasing independence in their instrumental work and continue to refine their performance skills across a range of classroom instruments.

Middle School Assembly Music Highlights

On Monday 23 March, our final Middle School Assembly for Term 1 was filled with wonderful music and vibrant student talent.

Trisha P opened the performances with a poised and expressive rendition of Theme by Fritz Spindler, a piece she is currently preparing for examination. Her ability to perform confidently in two parts showed maturity well beyond her years.

Sophie P then lifted the energy in the room with her spirited performance of Bon Jovi’s It’s My Life. She delivered a driving interpretation of this piece, demonstrating impressive growth in her timing and confidently tackling drum fills with flair.

As we look ahead to Music Week in Term 2, it is inspiring to see our young musicians stepping onto the stage with courage, enthusiasm and a willingness to share their sound. Their performances encourage others to dream big and embrace the joy of making music.

BAS Golf

On Tuesday 24 March, BMG recently took six students to the annual BAS Golf event in Ballarat, competing against schools within the ICCES Association.

At the conclusion of the event, Harvey (9A) finished 11th in the Junior Boys BAS competition and placed an impressive 2nd in the ICCES Association event – well done, Harvey!
Thomas (10H) placed 5th in the BAS competition and finished 3rd overall among ICCES schools. As a result, Thomas has qualified for the SSV State Finals in May – a fantastic achievement.
Well done to all students for their efforts and for representing BMG with pride. A sincere thank you to Mr Glen and Mr Borg for their assistance and support at this event.

Western Metropolitan Regional Swimming Carnival

On Tuesday, 31 March 2026, BMG was proudly represented at the Western Metropolitan Regional Swimming Carnival by four students. Competing against very strong opposition, many of these students achieved personal best performances on the day.

Year 3 and 4 Cross Country

The Years 3 and 4 students from the Woodlea Junior School participated in the annual Cross Country event in Term 1 at the school’s picturesque Staughton Vale Campus. This year’s event was uniquely combined with the Staughton Vale excursion which offered students the opportunity to complete their 2km race through the scenic surrounds before engaging in a series of team-building activities. It was a wonderful day that balanced physical challenge with collaboration and enjoyment.

On the day of the Year 3 Cross Country, the rain held off enabling students to complete their race and enjoy a spirited game of Tunnel Ball and Rob the Nest.

The Year 4 cohort commenced their day in cooler conditions, but with the gradual weather improvement, students were able to enjoy the sun’s warmth as they participated in collaborative activities such as the Human Knot, To the Market, and Tunnel Ball.

All students demonstrated commendable effort and determination with each runner contributing valuable points to their respective Houses. Congratulations to our podium finishes on the days:

Western Metropolitan Regional Swimming Championships

Congratulations to our students who qualified for and competed at the Western Metropolitan Regional Swimming Championships held on Tuesday 31 March at Kardinia Aquatic Centre.

Our girls represented the school with great pride and should be extremely pleased with their efforts and performances in the pool.

A special mention goes to Stella C (6WA), who achieved an outstanding result placing 3rd in the breaststroke event — a fantastic achievement.

Prep Reception visit Staughton Vale again!

During our second visit to the Staughton Vale Campus, the Prep Reception students enjoyed a hands-on day of outdoor learning. We were excited to spot kangaroos on arrival and then checked on the peas we planted last time which have now grown to around 10 cm tall. Students planted additional flowers, laid hay bedding to support the pea plants, and explored a range of herbs and guessed what they could be using their sense of smell.

The class also took part in a variety of activities that supported working together as a team. Students played hide and seek in the lemon orchard, painted individual rocks to add to the garden and began nature weaving using our new weaving frame. We finished the day with cooperation games in which students worked together demonstrating their communication and coordination skills. We can’t wait until our next visit!

Year 6 Biology Excursion

Recently, the Year 6 students at Maddingley participated in an excursion to the Staughton Vale Campus which was designed to develop their skills in Biological Sciences. Throughout the day, students worked in small groups with their Science teachers as they completed three practical activities.

One activity introduced students to techniques used for collecting and observing invertebrates found in leaf litter. Students learned how to gather samples responsibly, examine the organisms present, and identify key features that support their survival within this environment.

Students also undertook a classification task focused on leaves collected from various areas of the property. By examining characteristics such as shape, colour and texture, they constructed a dichotomous key as a tool for identifying different leaf types. This process supported their understanding of how scientists use observable features to classify living things.

The final activity explored the relationship between fire and the germination of many Australian native seeds. Students examined the sensitivity of these seeds to environmental cues and then used leaf litter ash to investigate its effect on germination conditions. This allowed students to apply scientific inquiry skills while learning about an important ecological process.

Australian Wildlife Society Award

On March 20, Staughton Vale Ambassadors Sonova, Surya and Tanish, on behalf of all the SV Ambassadors, were privileged to be invited to receive the Australian Wildlife Society (AWS) Group Youth Conservation Award at the AWS President’s Dinner held in Sydney.

The night started with the President’s address, followed by a guest speaker presentation by Dr. Stephen Van Mil, founder of Australia’s first and only mobile Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Van Mil shared his journey and insights about Wildlife Conservation and the initiatives his organisation is heading.

We were also privileged to meet and network with several other award winners who have been making significant contributions to Australia’s wildlife conservation efforts. We heard many inspiring stories that motivated us to continue to put in our best efforts to assist with wildlife conservation. Each one of the award winner’s conservation journeys started with a single action that grew into a huge initiative. We look forward to following in their footsteps and making an even bigger impact in our conservation journey.

When we received our award from the Australian Wildlife Society’s president Mr. Stephen Grabowski, Mr. Peter Lewis and Mr. John Creighton from the Southern Highlands wildlife sanctuary, we felt extremely honoured and proud of all the efforts we and SV ambassadors have been putting in the last two and a half years. We are extremely grateful to be recognised for our conservation efforts and look forward to continuing our journey throughout this year and the future.

We would also like to thank Mrs Heywood and Mrs. Hunter, our mentors and the driving force behind this initiative, and a special thanks to Mr. Northcott and Mrs. Heywood for taking us to Sydney.

ENRICHMENT

Term 1 Enrichment Highlight

As the first term draws to a close, it has been fantastic to see our students approach the new Enrichment Program with enthusiasm and curiosity. From Community Service to Drama, Creative writing and VCE masterclasses, students have embraced a wide variety of opportunities to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

The success of the program has been evident across the school, with both students and staff engaging positively in these experiences. As our Student Engagement Coordinators shared, “With the success of the new engagement program, it’s been so refreshing to see staff and students take this new program onboard and thoroughly ensure they’re enriching their studies and making the most of learning new skills. We’ve enjoyed seeing Middle and Senior School students working together, learning new skills and trying activities for the first time.”

As part of reflecting on the program’s launch, students have also shared their own experiences, highlighting the sense of enjoyment, achievement and connection they have felt. One student described the excitement of creativity and collaboration, sharing; “When me and my friends made a tower bigger than the teacher in Lego Club was so much fun!” Others spoke about the fun and energy within sessions, with one noting; “My memorable experience in an enrichment was doing K-pop karaoke and everyone was enjoying it.”

Students have also embraced new academic and practical challenges, with one reflecting, “When I first joined Math extension this year I did an activity and worked with complicated equations which was surprisingly fun,” while another shared their pride in developing a new skill; “One memorable experience that I’ve had in enrichment was when I first used a sewing machine and it was really fun. I am currently getting better at sewing.”

For many, Enrichment has become a highlight of the week, as captured by one student who said; “I wait until Thursday because I love my chess club!” These reflections demonstrate how the program is not only building skills but also fostering confidence, connection and a genuine enjoyment of learning.

It has been wonderful to hear such positive experiences from our students this term, and we look forward to seeing what Term Two has in store.

Throughout this term, 60 students from Years 5–8 have been participating in Photography as part of our Enrichment Program.

They have been developing their technical skills by learning to confidently use a camera and compose thoughtful images. Students completed a nature scavenger hunt and a creative photography Bingo Challenge, exploring elements such as blur, the rule of thirds, zoomed-in perspectives and ways to create interest and curiosity. It has been fantastic to see their creativity and confidence grow behind the lens.

Finally, students brought their skills together in an abstract photography project exploring what school means to them. Please enjoy viewing some of their amazing work below.

All private, shuttle, public and country buses will operate as per their timetable on the first day of students returning – Tuesday 21 April

Term 2 Late Buses

The late buses will operate as per the late bus timetables on the below days:

Maddingley Campus – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons commencing Tuesday 21 April. The last night of operation for the term will be Thursday 25 June.

Woodlea Campus – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons commencing Tuesday 28 April. The last night of operation for the term will be Thursday 18 June.

Timetables for the late buses are available on the school website for your reference. Please note that stops are limited to the students’ private bus travel timetables.

Costs of the late bus is $15.00 per child per trip.

Tiger Route Stop 4 – PM Road Works

Due to the ongoing road works at stop 4 in the PM on the TIGER route, the stop for the remainder of Term 1 will be relocated to Leakes Road / Cottesloe Wetlands (PTV Stop) between Embleton Avenue and Cottesloe Boulevard. There is no change to the AM stop on the timetable.

Camps, Sports, and Excursion Fund (CSEF)  

The Camps Sports and Excursion Fund (CSEF) is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families in covering the costs of school excursions, camps and sporting activities for the benefit of your child.  

The allowance is paid directly to the school by the Education Department. 

Eligible families include those holding a valid means-tested concession card such as a Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card, a Health Care Card, or those who are temporary foster parents. 

To encourage families to apply, the school will provide a rebate equivalent to the School Development Levy for families whose applications are submitted and approved by the Education Department. 

The CSEF application form can be downloaded here. The form outlines the eligibility requirements and must be submitted to the school as soon as possible and no later than 22 June 2026. 

Parents must meet the eligibility requirements by: 

  • Eligibility Date: 28 January 2026 
  • 2nd CRN validation date (for failed CRNs only): 20 April 2026 

Parents who received CSEF at Bacchus Marsh Grammar in 2025 do not need to submit a new application in 2026, provided there has been no change in family circumstances. 

Please note that CSEF payments apply only to the current application year and cannot be claimed retrospectively for prior years.

Health Centre

The BMG Health Centre would like to remind parents that if your child:

· has vomited, they should not be attending school until post a 24hr period from the last vomit time.
· has had a temperature, a viral cold or any viral illness, the best remedy for this is a rest day at home to allow the body to recover.
· has a sore throat, please send your child to school with lozenges to suck to assist with keeping the throat lubricated to help reduce discomfort.

Rest days are an important part of helping the body recover from basic viral illnesses, any other illness and helps the mind focus better when returning to school for learning.

Enjoy the holiday period and stay well and ready for Term 2.
