As we come to the end of Term 3, we would like to wish all our students and families a safe, happy and restful holiday break. We hope that the upcoming holidays provide an opportunity for families to spend quality time together, enjoy a well-earned break and return refreshed for the final term of the school year.

School will resume for for Prep to Year 11 students on Tuesday 6 October.

As we prepare for the warmer weather in Term 4, students are permitted to wear the summer uniform, although the full uniform remains acceptable to wear throughout the year. The holiday break is a great opportunity for families to check that student uniforms are clean, in good condition and still fit comfortably. Please also remember that school hats must be worn when students are outside from Prep to Year 6 and during Physical Education classes from Prep to Year 12.

As we come to the end of Term 3, it is wonderful to reflect on the many achievements, experiences and opportunities our Junior School students have embraced. Throughout the term, students have continued to develop their knowledge, skills and independence, while demonstrating our eight School values.

Term 4 is always an exciting time in the Junior School, with our students looking forward to a range of experiences, particularly our camp and adventure programs. Our camp program provides students with valuable opportunities to develop independence, resilience, teamwork and confidence outside the classroom.

Prep to Year 1 students will participate in day camp experiences, providing an introduction to camp activities.

Year 2 students will embark on their first overnight camp, providing an exciting opportunity to develop independence, responsibility and confidence. While Years 3 and 4 students will participate in a two-night camp, embracing a range of new challenges and experiences.

Across the camp programs, students will participate in a variety of recreation, personal development, team-building and environmental activities. These experiences encourage students to work collaboratively, try new things, support one another and develop greater independence.

Camps are a wonderful opportunity for students to put our school values into action. Leadership is demonstrated through taking responsibility and supporting others; Confidence through having a go at new experiences; Discipline through following instructions and taking responsibility. Respect is demonstrated through caring for others and the environment, and Kindness through encouraging and supporting fellow students.

We look forward to seeing our students embrace these experiences and return with many wonderful memories and stories to share.

A Reminder About School Bus Behaviour

As we look towards a busy Term 4, we also remind all students of the importance of demonstrating safe, respectful and responsible behaviour on school buses.

Students are expected to:

• Follow the instructions of the bus driver.
• Remain seated while the bus is moving.
• Sit facing the correct way and follow the seating plan at all times.
• Wear seat belt correctly.
• Not eat on the bus. (Only water bottles on the bus).
• Demonstrate our School Values at all times.
• Maintain a respectful noise level.

Travelling on a school bus is a shared responsibility, and positive behaviour helps ensure that everyone can travel safely and enjoyably.

Year 2 Reflection

During Term 3, our students have enjoyed a range of memorable experiences and enriching activities. In English, the students explored the text Wandi which follows the journey of an alpine dingo.

This week, the students were thrilled to welcome Ooti, a dingo from the Dingo Discovery Sanctuary. Ooti captivated the students and provided a unique opportunity to learn about dingoes and wildlife up close. The students discovered that dingoes are incredibly flexible and can rotate their heads up to 180 degrees. They also learned about their supersonic hearing and their ability to hear sounds such as a human heartbeat.

Literacy Week was another highlight featuring a variety of engaging activities designed to further a love of reading. The week finished with a colourful dress-up day, where students brought their favourite literary characters to life. The students demonstrated great creativity in designing costumes inspired by a text of their choice.

The students enjoyed an exciting Father’s Day afternoon, celebrating their dads through special crafts, games and shared moments together. Dads were introduced to our focus text, Wandi, and had the opportunity to see the students’ learning in action as they shared a fluency passage and explored the variety of sentence structures they have been learning about in English. Students completed an engaging STEM activity with their dads when they designed and created their own aluminium foil boats. The challenge was to build a functional boat that would stay afloat while holding the greatest number of pebbles. It was wonderful to see their creativity, problem-solving skills and persistence as they experimented with different designs.

Each of these experiences contributed to a dynamic and enjoyable term, filled with learning, creativity and a strong sense of community.

Our students have been busy creating, experimenting and developing their artistic skills this term.

Prep students have been inspired by the book ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’, using their painting and drawing skills to create colourful giraffe artworks.

Year 1 students have created beautiful painted artworks inspired by artist Anna Blatman, while Year 2 students have designed their very own dream houses using collage and painting techniques.

Year 3 students have been developing their sewing skills while creating pumpkins inspired by Yayoi Kusama, and Year 4 students have completed their wonderful animal “felties”, showcasing their creativity and growing skills.

What’s been happening in Year 2?

During Literacy Week, our Year 2 students were very lucky to spend time with Australian author Claire Saxby. Students enjoyed hearing about her wonderful books and learning more about what it is like to be an author.

Claire shared her experiences as a writer and inspired our students to think creatively about their own writing. The Year 2s loved having the opportunity to ask questions, share ideas and learn some tips from a real author!

It was a fantastic experience and a wonderful way to celebrate our love of reading, writing and storytelling.

Father’s Day Afternoon

On Friday 28 September, our Year 2 students were delighted to welcome many special people to our school for a wonderful afternoon together.

Students and their special guests enjoyed decorating their very own kites, using lots of colour and creativity to create some fantastic designs. Once the kites were ready, everyone headed out to the oval to put them to the test! It was wonderful to see students and their special people running, laughing and working together as their colourful kites soared through the air.

MAV Games Day

Once again, eight high-achieving Year 4 Mathematics students were selected to represent Bacchus Marsh Grammar to participate in the annual Mathematical Association of Victoria Games Day, hosted by St Anne’s Catholic Primary School in Park Orchards.

The students embraced this opportunity with enthusiasm and humility, conducting themselves with distinction throughout the event.

Competing against teams from other schools, they demonstrated exceptional mathematical knowledge, courage, collaboration and respect. In a highly competitive field, one of our teams achieved an outstanding 3rd place finish, a thoroughly deserved result that reflected the students’ dedication and teamwork.

Middle School Assembly 

As we approach the end of Term 3, our latest Middle School Assembly provided an opportunity to recognise the achievements of our students across academic, sporting, cultural and personal pursuits. It was also a timely reminder of the expectations and habits that help our students make the most of their opportunities at BMG.

Principals Award

One of the highlights was recognising the outstanding achievement of Emilia F, who represented the Australian Karate Team at the Thailand Open Karate Championships in Bangkok in August.

Competing as a Cadet for the first time at just 13 years of age, Emilia won all but one of her bouts, finishing with a well-earned silver medal in a competition that included athletes from 26 countries. This was an excellent achievement and a wonderful example of the confidence required to compete at an international level.

As we move towards the final part of the year, the assembly also reinforced some of the everyday expectations that underpin a successful Middle School.

Students were reminded of the importance of arriving at every class on time, remaining focused on their learning, wearing the uniform correctly and with pride, treating the school environment respectfully and, most importantly, always trying their best.

These may appear to be simple expectations, but consistency in these areas makes a significant difference to the learning environment for everyone.

Students were also reminded of the importance of “please” and “thank you”. While there are, of course, many other words that contribute to positive relationships, these two simple phrases can have a significant impact on the way we interact with others.

Good manners, respect and consideration are not simply school expectations, they are habits that students will carry with them throughout their lives.

As Term 3 draws to a close, students were reminded of maintaining the high standards they have been displaying this term and to prepare for a busy Term 4.

Year 5 Islands of Personality Open Afternoon

Our Year 5 students recently had the opportunity to proudly showcase their Islands of Personality during our Open Afternoon. This much-loved Middle School project is always a highlight, giving students the opportunity to reflect on who they are and creatively represent the people, interests, experiences and values that are important to them.

It was wonderful to see our students’ creativity in full swing as they transformed simple materials into incredibly unique and imaginative islands. No two projects were the same, with each island telling its own story and providing a special insight into what makes each student unique.

The project is about much more than creating an island. It encourages students to celebrate their individuality, share what matters to them and learn more about their peers. It also provides teachers, families and friends with an opportunity to better understand the personalities, passions and experiences of our Year 5 students.

Our Open Afternoon was a fantastic celebration of the students’ hard work, creativity and individuality. Students proudly displayed their islands and enjoyed sharing the meaning behind their creations with our visitors.

Year 9 Journeys – Adventure, Challenge and Plenty of Memories

What an incredible week our Year 9 students experienced as they embarked on their Journey Programs across Victoria. Whether hiking the rugged trails of the Surf Coast and Grampians, paddling along the Murray River, or exploring the Mornington Peninsula, students stepped outside their comfort zones and embraced every challenge that came their way. Inspired by the values of leadership, ambition, kindness, confidence and resilience, our students demonstrated remarkable growth throughout their adventures.

Over four action-packed days, students navigated unfamiliar terrain, carried their own equipment, prepared meals, set up campsites and worked together to overcome physical and mental challenges. There were sore legs, early mornings, plenty of laughs, and more than a few creative Trangia cooking attempts. Along the way, students discovered just how capable they are when they persevere, support one another and embrace the journey.

A huge thank you must go to our outstanding partners at the YMCA whose instructors, planning and support, helped make these experiences possible. Their enthusiasm, expertise and commitment to student wellbeing ensured that every journey was both safe and unforgettable.

We would also like to sincerely thank the staff members who generously gave up their time to accompany our students.

Whether they were hiking kilometres of bush tracks, helping students set up tents in record time, offering encouragement on challenging sections of the journey, or ensuring everyone was fed and smiling, their dedication made an enormous difference. We are incredibly grateful for their willingness to swap the comfort of home for sleeping bags, hiking boots and camp life.

Most importantly, congratulations to our Year 9 students. You embraced the unknown, supported your peers, pushed through challenges and created memories that will last a lifetime. The Journey Program is about far more than reaching a destination. It is about discovering what you can achieve along the way, and our students should be very proud of all they accomplished this year.

Literacy Week – A Symphony of Stories

The Bacchus Marsh Grammar Literacy Week was a vibrant celebration of reading, storytelling and the many ways literature can enrich our lives. Throughout the week, students across the Maddingley Campus had the opportunity to engage with books, authors, and stories in a variety of exciting and meaningful ways. This year’s theme, “Symphony of Stories,” highlighted how, as a symphony is made up of many different sounds, so literature brings together countless voices, perspectives and stories.

One of the major highlights of Literacy Week was the series of author guest speaker sessions, giving students from Prep to Year 8 the opportunity to meet and engage with published authors and literary professionals. These visits generated considerable enthusiasm among students, allowing them to hear directly from authors who had transformed their ideas and imaginations into stories. The sessions will encourage students to embrace literacy, develop their creativity, and discover the enjoyment that can come from reading and storytelling.

Students across the different year levels had, and will have, the opportunity to hear from Ben Sanders, Lucinda Gifford, Mark Carthew, Claire Saxby, Joel McKerrow, Stuart Wilson and Tristan Bancks, with some author visits having taken place during Literacy Week, and others occurring in the weeks that will follow. Year 6 students will experience ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ performed by Bell Shakespeare, providing them with an opportunity to engage with the work of one of the world’s most renowned playwrights and experience literature in a different form. These sessions expose students to different styles of writing and provide insights into the creative process behind the stories they read, while supporting their study of the current class text, ‘Once.’

Another highly anticipated event was the Literacy Dress Up Day on Friday 4 September. With the theme Symphony of Stories, students were encouraged to celebrate their favourite books and characters by dressing as someone from a story that had inspired or entertained them. From childhood characters to heroes, villains and imaginative figures from fictional literature, the campus was transformed into a vibrant collection of stories brought to life.

The dress-up day also provided an opportunity for students and teachers across the school to share their enthusiasm for literature with one another. Seeing students and staff embrace characters from such a diverse range of stories highlighted the incredible variety within the world of books. More importantly, the day demonstrated that literacy extends far beyond the classroom, showcasing how it can inspire creativity, encourage curiosity, and allow readers to explore experiences and perspectives beyond their own.

Ultimately, Literacy Week was a celebration of the power of stories. Through meeting authors and stepping into the shoes of favourite literary characters, students were given numerous opportunities to engage with literacy in meaningful and memorable ways, while also developing a deeper understanding and exploring their class texts in greater detail. With its Symphony of Stories theme, this year’s Literacy Week successfully brought the Maddingley Campus together through a shared appreciation of reading, imagination and the stories that connect us all.

Literacy Week – The Week That Was!

What an adventure Literacy Week 2026 was! Across the week, students and staff came together to celebrate reading, writing, storytelling and creativity through a range of fun and engaging activities. The enthusiasm and participation across the school was wonderful! Most importantly, Literacy Week provided opportunities for students of all ages to connect, have fun and share their love of literacy as a community.

Monday: Dress Up Day

Literacy Week kicked off with a colourful and creative Dress Up Day that had the entire school awash with famous fictional characters! From classic characters to modern favourites, every corner of the school offered something new to discover.

Tuesday: Autograph Hunt

Staff members dressed as famous people from autobiographical and biographical texts, and students set off around the school to track them down and collect their autographs. The hunt encouraged curiosity, conversation and plenty of movement as students worked together to identify each mystery character.

Wednesday: Butterbeer

Wednesday was filled with wizarding wonder as the Harry Potter Enrichment Club transformed literacy into a magical experience. Students successfully brewed Butterbeer for teachers, showcasing their teamwork, creativity and attention to detail as they perfected the sweet, frothy drink.

Ingredients: Vanilla ice-cream, creamy soda, cream, caramel sauce and butterscotch candies.

Thursday: Quidditch

The magic continued on Thursday with the Year 12 Quidditch Tournament, where students represented the four Hogwarts Houses in fast-paced matches. Spectators gathered with handmade flags to cheer on their teams, and the event was filled with laughter, energy and participation. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect, have fun and celebrate together.

Friday: Disney Dance and Sing-Along Party

Literacy Week concluded on a high note with a joyful Disney Dance and Sing-Along Party. Students and staff came together to perform favourite Disney songs, creating a wonderful atmosphere filled with music, laughter and school spirit. Student performances showcased confidence, enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved, while audience members sang along. The Junior School dance party added even more excitement, with students embracing the opportunity to celebrate the end of a fantastic week.

It was a fitting finale that brought the school community together and left everyone smiling, singing and already looking forward to Literacy Week in 2027.

In addition to the variety of activities for Junior, Middle and Senior School students, there was also some Literacy Week competitions. The classroom display competition saw students in each of the Tutor Groups transform their rooms into vibrant, themed showcases inspired by their assigned year level author or genre.

Some classes brought the mischievous magic of Roald Dahl to life, filling their classrooms with larger-than-life characters, whimsical settings and playful visual details. Others leaned into childhood classics, creating warm, nostalgic displays that celebrated the stories many students grew up reading. Meanwhile, other Tutor Groups embraced the intrigue of the mystery genre, suspenseful spaces filled with clues, codes and hidden surprises.

Clocktower Centre requires everyone over the age of 18 months to have a paid and allocated ticket. Children under the age of 18 months may sit on someone’s lap, without requiring a ticket.

SSV State Netball Finals

On Wednesday 9 September, 12 of our Year 5 to 6 girls proudly represented BMG at the SSV State Netball Finals held at the Waverley Netball Centre.

In what was a challenging and highly competitive day, the girls gave their all throughout every match and represented the school with great pride, determination and sportsmanship.

While the team unfortunately finished the day without a win, qualifying for the SSV State Finals was a fantastic achievement in its own right. Reaching this level of competition is a testament to the girls’ commitment, effort and development throughout the season.

BMG is extremely proud of the entire team and would like to congratulate them on their outstanding achievement. We thank the girls for all their hard work and dedication over the past two terms and look forward to seeing them continue to develop their netball in the years ahead.

BMG proudly took 24 students from Years 3 to 6 to the Western Ranges Division Athletics Championships in Keilor.

Victorian Ultimate Frisbee State Championships

Maddingley took an all-star Year 12 team to the annual Victorian Ultimate Frisbee State Championships at Royal Park.

After a fierce day of competition, the team finished the competition in 3rd place, securing a well-deserved bronze medal.

For many of these students, this will be their final opportunity to represent BMG before graduating. It was a fantastic way for them to finish their sporting journey at BMG and leave with a bronze medal to show for their efforts.

Staughton Vale Ambassadors – Saturday Conservation Efforts

Recently, on a Saturday, some of the Woodlea Staughton Vale Ambassadors (SVA) volunteered their time to visit Staughton Vale and continue working on their biodiversity conservation project. For many of our Staughton Vale Ambassadors, this was their last trip to Staughton Vale as many of our Year 11 students are retiring from being Ambassadors in order to pursue their Year 12 studies.

SV Ambassadors hiked up the hill towards their conservation site where they were briefed on how to effectively plant the plants and how to install the necessary equipment and guards around the plants to ensure they can flourish without any disturbance. By planting these native plants, SV Ambassadors can contribute towards the restoration of the environment at Staughton Vale.

Unexpectedly, ambassadors discovered an abandoned joey near our conservation area. Luckily, with the help of staff, we were able to pick up the joey and put him in a warm jacket, so that he could stay warm until wildlife rescuers arrived.

This encounter was unexpected, but it created an unforgettable moment for Staughton Vale ambassadors!

Finally, thank you to Mrs Heywood, Mrs Hunter and Mr Gorton, who supported Staughton Vale ambassadors with their conservation efforts and helped out on the day!

Northern Star Chess Secondary Open Regional

On Tuesday 8 September, eight students from Years 8 to 12 were selected to represent Bacchus Marsh Grammar at the Northern Star Secondary Regional Final, held at Werribee Secondary College. Our students proudly represented the school, competing across multiple rounds against 24 schools from across the region.

Throughout the day, the students demonstrated excellent critical thinking, concentration and sportsmanship. Their efforts contributed to an outstanding 4th place overall finish for Bacchus Marsh Grammar.

Congratulations to Cherish V of 11I, who finished in 2nd place in his age category and achieved an excellent score.

All students are to be commended for their effort, teamwork and positive attitude throughout the competition.

A special thank you to the event organisers at Northern Star Chess, as well as all staff involved for supporting our students throughout the day.

Japanese Language Assistant

The Woodlea Campus had the privilege of hosting a Japanese language assistant, Miina Takeshita from Kyoto, for four weeks during August as part of the Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language Assistant Program (TJFL).

Miina brought her bubbly and cheerful personality to Japanese language classes, enhancing classroom learning by providing authentic language experiences to students from Years 5 to 12. It was wonderful to see our senior students studying Japanese making the most of every opportunity to develop their speaking skills by conversing with Miina.

I would like to thank Mr Daniel Screen and his family for providing a warm and welcoming home environment for Miina during her four-week stay.

Community Service – 2026 National Finals Qualifiers

Have you ever seen a problem and wished someone would do something about it? Community Service at BMG is built on the belief that each of us has the ability to be that someone. Every positive change begins with a person who is willing to step forward, take action, and work with others to make a difference.

Through a diverse range of projects, we strive to create outcomes that have enduring impact, enriching, not only our own lives, but also the lives of those around us. These initiatives are driven by a genuine desire to make a difference, and your support can help transform innovative ideas into meaningful and lasting community change.

An important aspect of our work is sharing our ideas and solutions on a national stage through our involvement with the Future Problem-Solving Australia Program. This provides our students with the opportunity to contribute to a broader movement dedicated to strengthening communities across Australia and beyond.

We are incredibly proud that our Community Service projects were recognised at the national level in both 2024 and 2025, enabling us to represent BMG with distinction while demonstrating our commitment to service, innovation and positive change.

This year, we are especially excited to have three teams representing Victoria at the 2026 National Finals in October. They are Project Trash is Art, Project Privacy and Project Act Against Extinction. Congratulations to the students in the project teams on achieving a place on the national team representing Victoria!

Literacy Week Visitors

During Literacy Week, the Libraries at Woodlea and Maddingley hosted author visits to engage students with storytelling, reading engagement, critical analysis and writing skills.

Students enjoyed visits from some of Australia’s best authors and illustrators, whose books always fly off the shelves after their visit!

Prep Reception and ELC students were visited by Ben Sanders, author and illustrator of the Agent Harrier series, the Bad Apple series and the Not Yours series

Prep met with Lucinda Gifford, talented author and illustrator of BMG favourite the Kevin the Grumpy Cat series

Year 1 were entertained by the musical storytelling of Mark Carthew, author of the Moose is Loose and the Dingle Dangle Jungle

Year 2 had a delightful visit with prolific author Claire Saxby, author of the ANZAC Billy and There was on old sailor

Year 3 will be visited in early Term 4 by Adrian Beck, author of the Little Legends and the Fox Kid series

Year 4 enjoyed a workshop from Victoria’s best writing coaches, the 100 Story Building team

Year 5 met with Joel McKerrow, poet and author of the Heist series

Year 6 students will be visited by the Bell Shakespeare company later in the year

Year 7 were visited by Stuart Wilson, author of the runaway hit the 113^th Assistant Librarian series.

Year 8 were (virtually) visited by Tristan Bancks, author of Scar Town, the Two Wolves series and the Mac Slater series.

Books by all authors are available to borrow from the library so students can continue to connect to quality Australian authors and their writing.

Year 12 Trial Exams

Year 12 trial exams are taking place on Monday 5 October 2026. Private bus services for both Maddingley and Woodlea will be available on this day for Year 12 students.

Term 4 Late Bus

The late bus will be available Term 4 for students in Years 5 to 12. Students travelling via the late bus must be enrolled in an after school or extra curriculum activity.

Campus Availability:

Maddingley – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from Tuesday 6 October to Thursday 10 December.

Woodlea – Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from Wednesday 7 October to Thursday 3 December.

Late Bus Allocation and Student Sign Up

• Students are required to sign themselves up for the relevant late bus by adding their names under the stop at which they will disembark. Sign-up must be completed before 1.30pm on the day of travel.
• Students who have not signed up by 1.30pm will not be permitted to travel on the late bus. Parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child from school at 4.20pm. Students are still expected to attend their scheduled after-school class or activity.
• Any student presenting at the bus quay after their after-school activity, without being allocated to the late bus, will not be permitted to board. The student will be taken to Reception, and parents will be contacted to organise collection.
• Late bus sign-up sheets are located in Reception.
• The late bus fee is $15.00 per child, per trip, and will be charged to family school fee accounts at the end of each term.

Allocated Roll Call Stops

If you have changed your child/ren’s stop where they board or disembark as a permanent change and have not notified the school, please contact the School Bus Services Administrator on 5366 4800 or email bus@bmg.vic.edu.au.

This information needs to be up-to-date on Roll Call for emergency services and will assist in the planning for 2027 stops, routes, times and timetabling.

2027 Private Bus Travel

All current students who travelled by private bus in 2026 have been rolled over to their current stop for 2027 private bus travel.

If your child/ren’s current bus travel arrangements are going to change (e.g. moving house or will not require private bus travel) for 2027, please contact the School Bus Services Administrator on 5366 4800 or email bus@bmg.vic.edu.au to discuss this change.  If your child/ren will not require a private bus service in 2027, and parents do not advise us, your child/ren will be allocated to a private bus and fees will apply.

2027 Country Bus Travel

Applications for Permission to Travel forms have been sent to eligible families via Edsmart, for children who are eligible to travel on a country bus to Bacchus Marsh Grammar Maddingley Campus in 2027.

Application forms were due back by Friday 11 September 2026.  If you have not returned your form, please do so ASAP.

Please note that failure to submit this form to the office by the due date may result in your child/ren not being eligible to travel on a Government Operated Bus Service in 2027.
