Welcome to Term 3. It is hard to believe we have already reached this point in the year. I trust the break provided your family with some rest, quality time together and an opportunity to recharge.

A particular welcome is extended to the new students and families joining Bacchus Marsh Grammar this term. We are pleased to have you as part of our community and trust you will settle in well.

As we return, I want to reaffirm the school’s commitment to maintaining a calm, structured and focused learning environment for every student. We continue to set high expectations and appreciate the support of families in reinforcing these at home. Our collective goal remains clear: to support each student in achieving their personal best, both academically and in their broader development.

Parent/Teacher Interviews will take place later this term. If you have not already done so, I encourage you to review your child’s Semester 1 report, available via Schoolbox. These interviews are a valuable opportunity to reflect on progress and discuss ways to support continued growth and achievement.

Term 3 is also an ideal time for students to engage in the wide range of extracurricular opportunities that are available. Whether through sport, music, debating and public speaking, chess club, or other activities, these experiences contribute significantly to personal development and a strong sense of connection to school life. We encourage all students to get involved, perhaps even trying something new. Participation in extracurricular programs also earns students valuable points towards their School Colours.

Character Education Insights: Lessons from a Japanese Perspective

As part of Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s commitment to Character Education, the school has played a leading role in establishing a Character Education Coalition. This coalition brings together like-minded independent schools that also prioritize character as a fundamental component of their educational journey.

At a recent international forum focused on discussing and researching Character Education, I encountered some compelling insights on resilience and perseverance from a Japanese perspective. I believe these principles would greatly benefit our students as they begin Term Three.

Ikigai
Ikigai refers to having a clear purpose in life—the reason you wake up each morning. It invites reflection on the purpose of each day: What can I gain from today? More importantly, what must I contribute to make today meaningful?

Kaizen
Kaizen emphasizes small, continuous improvements every day. The goal is to be at least 1% better each day. This concept is particularly relevant for our students as they consider how to improve consistently: What small step can I take today that will enable me to build momentum tomorrow?

Shoshin
Shoshin is about maintaining a beginner’s mindset—approaching new challenges with curiosity, openness, and humility. For our students, it encourages always giving their best effort regardless of the outcome. “It’s okay to lose, but not to fail. Failure is not trying in the first place.”

Ganbaru
Ganbaru means giving your best effort no matter how difficult things become. Rather than striving for perfection, the focus is on progress: showing up, being patient, and doing your best even when the task is tough.

These Japanese concepts provide valuable guidance to help our students cultivate virtues such as resilience and perseverance. Character Education involves building and applying knowledge, acquiring tools and insights that enable our students to make wise, informed decisions and flourish within our communities.

Welcome Back to Term 3

We are excited to see everyone return refreshed and ready for another great term of learning. This term brings new opportunities for students to continue their learning journey through a wide range of classroom experiences and new topics. We’re looking forward to a positive and productive term together.

We kindly remind all families of the importance of arriving at school on time each morning. A prompt start helps students feel calm, prepared and ready for learning when classes begin. Likewise, leaving promptly at the end of the day supports a calm and orderly environment during pick-up and ensures all students are safely collected under staff supervision.

School Uniform Reminder

A friendly reminder that all students are expected to wear their full school uniform. Please ensure that your child’s uniform aligns with our School Uniform and Dress Code Policy (refer to page 11 of the Student School Diary). Teachers will be closely monitoring uniforms this term to ensure students are wearing them correctly. This includes ensuring top buttons are fastened, shirts are tucked in. and ties are worn. Please also ensure that all uniform items are clearly labelled with your child’s name. For safety reasons, jewellery is not permitted without written approval from the Principal. We appreciate your continued support in upholding our school’s dress standards.

Student Safety Reminder

We also ask for your support in reinforcing an important safety message with your child. To ensure the safety of all students and families, ball games are not permitted before or after school in the Junior School.
Due to the high volume of pedestrian traffic during drop-off and pick-up times, it is essential that we maintain a safe and calm environment for everyone.

Year 4 Student Chromebook Licences

We are thrilled to share that our Year 4 students are due to begin the process of working towards earning their Chromebook licences! This is an important milestone as it means that once they have completed the necessary steps, they will be permitted to take their Chromebooks home each night.

This initiative is designed to help students develop essential digital skills, take responsibility for their devices and extend their learning beyond the classroom. To earn their Chromebook licences, students must demonstrate their understanding of safe, respectful and responsible online behaviour, proper care of their Chromebooks, and adherence to the Bacchus Marsh Grammar student technology use policies.

We believe this is a valuable opportunity for students to enhance their learning experiences and we are confident they will rise to the challenge.

Super Speak Achievement Award

A big congratulations to Aaradhya J and Cahir P on receiving their Super Speak Achievement Awards.

Aaradhya and Cahir’s awards are presented to students who have completed 2.5 years of Public Speaking and Communication Skills training at Super Speak (equivalent to 100 hours) and presented 10 formal solo speeches.

Year 2

The Year 2 students had a busy and exciting Term 2, filled with engaging events and hands-on learning.

As part of their Global Studies unit, they explored Japan’s rich culture, learning about traditional foods, clothing, customs and landmarks, as well as Japanese writing and numbers. Highlights included trying on traditional outfits, a Mount Fuji-inspired science experiment, and painting cherry blossoms during their visit to Staughton Vale.

Staughton Vale is always a highlight for our students, and Term 2’s visit was no exception. They enjoyed a range of outdoor activities including bug hunting and hut building, where they applied their learning from the Procedure Writing unit.

Another standout moment was Ambition Day when students dressed as their future selves and collaborated with parents to create vision boards, celebrating their creativity and aspirations. This week, Year 2 students have settled back into the classroom after the holidays and are ready for another exciting term of learning and growth.

Art

Throughout Terms 1 and 2, Year 3 and 4 students engaged in a range of creative projects that developed their artistic skills, cultural awareness and confidence.

One of the highlights was a mixed media composition inspired by Uluru, where Year 4 students used charcoal to create dramatic outback landscapes. Through this unit, students delved into the rich culture of the Anangu people, the traditional custodians of the land. It has sparked ongoing curiosity with students and deepens their understanding of Indigenous perspectives by exploring resources such as The Essential Introduction to Aboriginal Art from the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Students then extended their creative practice by sculpting clay turtles, a hands-on task that not only strengthened their fine motor skills, but also nurtured a growing interest in turtles as symbols of longevity and resilience.

Year 3 students also explored the seven elements of art by creating detailed leaf artworks, proudly mounting and framing their pieces independently. It has been a joy to witness the students’ growing confidence, cultural curiosity and strong sense of ownership in their artistic journeys.

A new term and opportunities to be had: a Year 6 leader perspective

As the new semester begins, I feel a strong sense of energy and purpose. It’s the perfect time to reset, refocus and push myself in academics, sport and co-curricular activities.

Over the holidays, I reflected on last term – what I did well, where I could improve and what goals I want to set moving forward, especially as I continue developing as a leader. Academically, I aim to stay more organised and disciplined. I want to keep on top of assignments, revise regularly instead of cramming, and contribute more actively to class discussions.

I’ve also set a goal to challenge myself by entering academic competitions like the Science contests, MAV Games or the AMC. I know that the more I invest in my learning, the more I’ll gain, not just in marks, but in confidence and skills that will benefit me well beyond school. I want to start viewing school not just as a place I have to go, but as a space where I grow.

Outside the classroom, I’m equally excited about what lies ahead. Sport is a huge part of my school life and something I’m really passionate about—whether it’s soccer, AFL, cricket or House competitions. I love the energy and teamwork that come with being active. This semester, I want to train harder, support my teammates more, and lift my performance in upcoming events.

Being on the field gives me a mental break from study, while teaching me commitment, resilience, and how to perform under pressure, skills that translate into every area of life.

Beyond sport, I plan to explore more co-curricular opportunities. There are clubs I’ve wanted to try, like debating or Landcare, and school events where I can pitch in or simply help build our school spirit. I’ve realised that the more you get involved, the more fun and rewarding school becomes.

This term, I’m aiming to give my best, whether I’m learning in class, training on the field, or joining new activities that help me grow, connect with others and be a better leader.

If you’re wondering how to make your school experience better, start by choosing one thing to work on this term. It could be raising your hand more in class, joining a new club, helping someone out, or getting your homework done on time. Just one small step can lead to big improvements.

So why not give it a go? Be brave, try something new, and take charge of your own learning and growth. You might surprise yourself with what you can achieve!

Woodlea Year 6 Canberra Trip

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. 

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

In the final week of Term 2, our Year 6 students had the incredible opportunity to explore some of the nation’s most important institutions during their Canberra camp.

A key focus of the trip was deepening our understanding of democracy. At the Museum of Australian Democracy and the National Electoral Education Centre, students learned how laws are made and how voting works in both houses of Parliament. They also stepped into the shoes of politicians during a hands-on role-play session at Parliament House.

The visit to the Governor-General’s residence was a unique experience, offering a rare look at this significant national landmark. Students also toured the Royal Australian Mint and watched robotic machinery in action as they discovered how coins are made.

At the Australian War Memorial, Ishaan and Lathika represented the school with pride as they laid a wreath in honour of Sergeant Wason Herbert Watsford Arnold. Their respectful conduct, and that of all our students, was commended by members of the public, making it a proud moment for our community.

Other highlights included a tour of the Royal Military College at Duntroon, a visit to the Australian Institute of Sport where students were inspired by elite athletes in training, and an engaging workshop at the National Film and Sound Archive. Students also explored international diplomacy on Embassy Drive and enjoyed orienteering at the National Arboretum.

Evening activities such as bowling, Questacon and a talent show added plenty of fun to a meaningful and educational week.

Premier’s VCE Awards – Joshua Park (General Mathematics)

The annual Premier’s VCE Awards recognise students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

Individual Graded Assessment scores are used to determine the order of merit and identify the best students. A total of only 300 Study Awards were presented across over 90 VCE subjects.

Joshua Park was a recipient of a Study Award for General Mathematics and recognised as one of the best students in this subject at a ceremony held on Wednesday 2 July.

This is an outstanding achievement and a highly prestigious award for Joshua that recognises his outstanding diligence and work ethic.

Joshua was presented with his Premier’s Award by the Victorian Premier, the Hon. Jacinta Allen, Deputy Premier and Minister of Education, the Hon. Ben Allen and Victorian Governor, Professor the Hon. Margaret Gardiner AC.

Year 10 Inspire Program – Service Leadership Focus

As part of the Inspire Program, our Year 10 students will be participating in a Service Leadership initiative this term. Service is a vital aspect of character development, teaching young people the value of empathy, responsibility, and making a positive impact in their communities.

Each Year 10 Tutor Group will focus on a specific charity, learning about its mission and raising awareness within the school community. Students will present information on how we can support their chosen charity in our everyday lives, aiming to educate and inspire meaningful action. To help bring their cause to life, each Tutor Group will also run a unique awareness activity. We strongly encourage all students to get involved and support these initiatives as part of our shared commitment to community engagement and service.

The wider school community will be kept informed about each charity through Schoolbox News, the school newsletter, and flyers displayed in classrooms. We look forward to everyone’s involvement and support as our students take on this valuable leadership opportunity.

Little Long Walk

What a fantastic event we had out at Staughton Vale at the end of Term 2, where we brought together both the Woodlea and Maddingley Prep cohorts alongside the ELC students. Despite the cold and windy conditions, it proved to be an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone involved. It was a significant achievement, and an impressive sight to see such a large group come together for this special occasion.

Inspired by Michael Long’s 2004 walk to Canberra, the Little Long Walk is a special opportunity to learn about Indigenous culture, promote reconciliation and honour the ongoing journey toward unity and respect.

One of the highlights was seeing the students so engaged in small reading groups exploring Indigenous stories. This was followed by the powerful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, which added a meaningful cultural element to the day.

The students also took part in the Little Long Walk, proudly carrying our vibrant, eye-catching banners. A special thank you to Mrs Cassar for leading the creation of these bold and beautiful banners with the Prep classes. They made a fantastic impact on the event, and Aunty Glenda was particularly impressed with the effort and quality put into them.

The day concluded with the annual planting of the Preplemon-scented gum tree at Staughton Vale and decorating handprints, allowing students to reflect on and share their understanding of the significance of the event.

ICCES Winter Tour

BMG proudly took 149 students to Shepparton to compete in the annual ICCES Winter Tour during the final week of Term 2. Across two days of intense and spirited competition, students represented the school in Basketball, Hockey, Netball and Soccer – all contested in the true ICCES spirit of sportsmanship and determination.

As reigning Winter Tour Champions, BMG entered the tournament with high expectations. Despite the pressure, our students rose to the occasion, showcasing impressive resilience, teamwork and skill across all sports.

As part of the team, Rose will travel to Spain later this year to compete in an international tournament. We wish Rose every success as she prepares for this exciting opportunity and look forward to following her journey.

Singapore International Sports Training Tour

On July 1, a group of 13 students from the Maddingley and Woodlea campuses, along with staff, travelled to Singapore to participate in the school’s eighth International Sports Training Tour, hosted by the Singapore Sports School. The tour provided a unique opportunity for student-athletes to train in world-class facilities under the guidance of elite sports professionals.

The program focused on several key areas of athlete development, including:
• Introduction to sport-specific international training environments
• Education around the demands of travel as an elite athlete
• Strategies for preparing the body before and after flights
• Nutrition and training/competition while abroad
• Strength and conditioning while travelling
• Education and practical application of fatigue and recovery strategies
• Cultural immersion and experiences in Asia

Despite the hot and humid conditions, with daily temperatures ranging between 29°C and 34°C, students trained with impressive dedication and resilience. The contrast to Melbourne’s winter chill was a welcome change, and the group embraced both the physical challenges and cultural experiences.

In addition to the rigorous training sessions, students also had the opportunity to explore some of Singapore’s most iconic attractions, including Universal Studios, the Night Safari, local shopping precincts, and the Wild Wild Wet Water Park.

A welcome addition to this year’s program was a guided tour of the Singapore National Stadium and its training facilities. During the tour, students gained insight into the history of Singapore’s sporting development and were shown the nation’s premier venue for sport, lifestyle, and national events. A particular highlight was receiving all-access passes to areas typically reserved for elite athletes and VIPs.

Sincere thanks go to all participating students for their maturity, enthusiasm, and commitment, which contributed to making the tour both successful and memorable. Special thanks are also extended to Mr De Bortoli and Mr Glen for their professionalism throughout the tour.

A great thank you is extended to Mrs Ogston for her ongoing support of Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s sporting programs, to Mr Bryce Durham for his organisation and leadership in the lead-up to the trip, and to the Singapore Sports School, particularly Miss Cindy Tan, for her invaluable assistance and warm hospitality.

We look forward to returning to Singapore for another enriching tour experience in two years’ time.

Maddingley Girls’ Soccer Team Represents BMG at Western Ranges Finals

Congratulations to our Grade 5 and 6 Girls’ Soccer Team, who began their impressive run by winning the pennant at our recent Winter Sports Competition. Their success earned them the opportunity to represent Bacchus Marsh Grammar at the Western Ranges Soccer Finals on Thursday, 27^th June—the final day of Term 2.

At the event, the team proudly represented both the school and the Bacchus Marsh Primary Schools Sports Association (BMPSSA). In the lead-up to the finals, the girls trained diligently, demonstrating outstanding commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Their efforts were evident on the field, as they played with determination and resilience against some of the region’s strongest teams.

A special thank you goes to Mr Jayden Pazeski for his expert coaching and support—both during training and on the day of the event. His guidance played a significant role in the team’s preparation and overall performance.

Congratulations to all players for their enthusiasm, effort, and pride in representing Bacchus Marsh Grammar on a regional stage. We look forward to seeing this talented group continue to grow and achieve in future competitions.

Students will be given wish-lists to fill out when they attend their Book Fair session. These wish-lists also contain details on now to order from Lamont. If they choose to purchase from the Fair, parents are to order and pay online. The BMG Library will receive notification of placed orders each morning and the team will package and arrange pickup/delivery of orders to students that day while the Fair is running. Orders placed online after each Fair has closed, and any backorders will be delivered as soon as possible and arrangements made to distribute to students.

Penguin Bus: Updated Timetable

Effective Tuesday 22 July 2025

Due to road works on Tarneit Road, the Penguin Route will be affected at stop 1 in the am and stop 2 in the pm.  The stop will be moved to 939 Leakes Road (PTV Stop).  Parent parking is available in the Service Road.  The updated stop will be effective as of Tuesday 22 July 2025. Parents have been notified via the BMG channels of communication along with an updated timetable.

Toolern Vale Country Service

There has been a stop change on the Toolern Vale service. This service provides free travel for those students who are eligible under the school bus program, but also provides Myki access for stops prior to the Toolern Vale roundabout. Myki travellers are not required to register for travel.  Please contact the School Bus Services Administrator if you require an updated timetable.

This change will only affect the students not registered under the school bus program but are using the service as a public MYKI traveller, and only affects the pm service route. The service route which reflects the change will commence 21 July 2025.

Private Bus Travel 2026

We are currently rolling over students from 2025 private bus travel to 2026 private bus travel.

If your child/ren’s current bus travel arrangements are going to change or require to be changed (eg moving house, will not require private bus travel) for 2026, please contact the School Bus Services Administrator on 5366 4800 or email bus@bmg.vic.edu.au to discuss this change.  If your child/ren will not require a private bus service in 2026 and parents do not advise the school, your child/ren will be allocated to a private bus and fees will apply.

If you have changed your child/ren’s stop that they board or disembark as a permanent change, and have not notified the school, please contact the School Bus Services Administrator on 5366 4800 or email bus@bmg.vic.edu.au.  This information needs to be up to date on roll call for emergency services and will assist in the planning for 2026 routes/timetables.

Concussion Policy and Procedures

If your child sustains a concussion, whether it occurs during school activities, sports or outside of school hours, it is essential that the School is informed as soon as possible. Prompt notification ensures that the School can provide the necessary support and adjustments for your child’s safe recovery and return to learning activities and sport.

How to Notify the School:

• Parent Portal in Schoolbox: Parents and guardians can update their child’s health information by navigating to the Medical Conditions tab.
• Direct Contact: Alternatively, you may contact the School Administration or the Health Centre directly via phone or email to report the concussion and discuss any specific care requirements.

The School’s Concussion Policy and Procedure is available to view from the School Policies tile in Schoolbox.

ICAS 2025

The registration information for ICAS 2025, including the school’s access code, has been sent to families of all students in Years 2 to 10.
What is ICAS?
ICAS is an online academic competition that gives students the opportunity to challenge their higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics and Science.
Every student who participates is celebrated and recognised with a printed certificate in each subject area, and an online results report to track their development each year. Top performers are eligible for one of the highly coveted ICAS medals.

The Neighbour’s Place

The Neighbour’s Place Inc. is an Emergency Food Relief Centre, established by local Churches, which helps people in the Moorabool Shire who may be struggling to put food on the table due to unforeseen expenses, for example, medical bills, car repairs, etc. We can supply frozen food, bread, milk and pantry items.

Residents can visit TNP for assistance on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9.30am to 12.30pm.

We are located at 77 Main Street, BM on the service road.
