Welcome to Term 3

Welcome back to all our students, families and staff for the beginning of Term 3. I hope the three-week break provided everyone with an opportunity to rest, spend time with family and friends, and return ready for another exciting term of learning.

Although the mornings are still crisp, there is a sense that we are beginning to turn the corner. The days are gradually becoming longer, a timely reminder that progress is often made through small, consistent steps rather than dramatic leaps.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” It is a wonderful reminder that success—whether in the classroom, on the sporting field or in our personal lives—is built one decision, one lesson and one effort at a time.

For our Year 11 and 12 students, Term 3 marks an important stage of the academic year. With SACs, trial examinations and final assessments approaching, this is the time for focus, consistency and purposeful preparation. While the end of the year may seem daunting, significant progress can be achieved by concentrating on today’s lesson, tonight’s study session and this week’s goals. Small, consistent efforts over the coming months will place students in the strongest possible position as they approach their final assessments.

For every student across our campuses, Term 3 also presents an opportunity to reset. Whether last term finished exactly as you had hoped or not, each new term offers a fresh beginning. It is never too late to establish better habits, challenge yourself academically, become more involved in school life or simply strive to be the very best version of yourself each day.

There is certainly much to look forward to over the coming weeks. The Subject & Careers Expo at each campus will provide valuable opportunities for students and families to explore future pathways, ask questions and begin thinking about the exciting possibilities beyond school. In our Junior Schools, we will celebrate our Prep’s first 100 days of school – a major milestone. Alongside these highlights, students across the school will experience incursions, excursions, performances, camps, competitions and countless learning opportunities that make Term 3 such a rewarding time of year.

We wish every member of our community a successful and rewarding Term 3. We encourage each student to embrace the opportunities ahead, take that next small step, and make the most of everything this term has to offer.

The Podium: Finding Our Feet Again

Returning to school after a break always has a rhythm of its own. The sleep ins and looser days of the holidays give way to bells, timetables and the steady pace of term, and that shift asks something of all of us, from our youngest students in the Prep classrooms through to our senior students preparing for the demands of Year 12. This term, our character focus turns to three values that make that transition a good one: kindness, discipline and wisdom.

Discipline: Rebuilding the Rhythm

Discipline is often thought of as something imposed from outside, but the truest form of it is the structure we choose to give ourselves. Coming back from holidays is the perfect moment to reset routines that may have slipped, particularly around sleep, since a settled sleep routine does more for our capacity to cope with the pressures of term than almost anything else. Alongside this, eating well, making time to move our bodies and setting aside moments to read all help build the kind of steady foundation that discipline is meant to provide. For our older students, this might mean returning to study routines and ensuring folders and study materials are ready to go. For our younger students, it might simply mean re-establishing the habit of a set bedtime and a calm start to the morning. Whatever the age, the principle is the same: good structure is not a limitation on our freedom, it is what makes everything else possible.

Wisdom: Learning From What Came Before

Wisdom asks us to pause and reflect rather than simply rush forward. The first day back is a fitting time to revisit our expectations of ourselves, much as we might on the first day of a new school year. What worked well last semester, and what did not serve us as well as we had hoped? A wise student, or indeed a wise staff member, takes the time to think this through honestly, rather than assuming the old approach will simply carry them along again. Setting a clear goal for each lesson, rather than drifting through the day, is one small but meaningful way that wisdom shows up in daily practice. It is the quiet discipline of thinking before acting.

Kindness: The Value That Holds It Together

Amid all this focus on routines and reflection, it is worth remembering that kindness towards ourselves matters as much as kindness towards others. Managing the stress that can come with a new term is not a sign of weakness but a sign of self awareness, and part of being kind to ourselves is having a plan for how we will handle pressure when it arises. It is also an opportunity to be kind to those around us as we all find our feet again together. A gentle word to a classmate who seems to be struggling with the return to routine, or patience with a sibling or friend who is a little slower to settle back in, reflects the same spirit of care that we hope to see across our whole school community.

Continuing to Strive

As we settle back into the term ahead, we encourage every student, from Prep to Year 12, to hold these three values in mind. Structure gives us stability, wisdom gives us direction, and kindness gives us connection. Together, they are what will help each of us continue to strive towards being our best selves this term.

Welcome back to Term 3! It has been wonderful to see all of our Junior School students return with smiling faces, ready for another term of learning and new experiences. We hope the holidays provided your family with an opportunity to rest, recharge and enjoy time together.
As we begin the term, we ask that you please ensure your child is wearing the correct school uniform each day. Please refer to the School Diary for a list of the approved uniform items.
We also encourage all parents to take the opportunity to read their child’s Semester 1 report in preparation for the upcoming Parent-Teacher Interviews this term. These conversations are an important opportunity to celebrate your child’s achievements and discuss their learning goals for the remainder of the year.
Thank you for your continued support in reinforcing our school values at home. Kindness and respect are at the heart of our community and play an important role in creating a positive, inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.

Why Do Prep Reception Ask Everyday – “Are We Going to Staughton Vale?”

Prep Reception children absolutely love their days at Staughton Vale, and it’s easy to see why.

Time spent with Mr Inei (Farmer Joel) and Ms Stacey gives students the chance to explore, create and get their hands dirty in the best possible way. In a recent literacy lesson students were asked about their favourite parts of their visits this term, the responses were full of excitement and personality.
Many students spoke about the things they made and tasted. Sahib, Samuel and Billy enjoyed creating clay butterflies, while Noah, Lawrence, Manraj, Anika and Vanya couldn’t go past cooking delicious lemon bliss balls with lemons sourced from the onsite orchard. Miraan, Sebastian and Harrison also loved eating pasta made with fresh basil from the garden. Elaahi enjoyed making a bird using natural materials, and Aadi had fun painting caterpillars on the garden poles. Molly was proud to be part of designing the bush food mosaic sign, and Rabaab loved the adventure of measuring and discovering “dinosaur bones.”

For others, it was all about being outdoors and sharing the experience with friends. Chann enjoyed gardening and growing flowers with Farmer Joel, and Maeve was excited to plant three bean seeds of her own. Roxie loved sitting with friends at the picnic tables for snack and chatting, while Paddy enjoyed playing soccer at lunch in a huge play space. Jind’s highlight was dancing at the Gathering with a First Nations performer, and Rubani loved doing some kangaroos spotting in the surrounding landscape. Katya was excited to hear we are returning to the “beautiful place” soon.

The students are working towards running to the top of a mountain and countdown to the next visit. We have composted, mulched, tasted, smelled and been hands-on across a curriculum full of wonder and learning.
These days at Staughton Vale continue to be a highlight for Prep Reception, offering meaningful opportunities to learn, explore and connect with the natural environment.

Year 1

A highlight for the Year 1 students last term was our Native Animals Incursion which provided a valuable opportunity to activate students’ prior knowledge as they began their Information Report unit.

Through this engaging, hands-on experience, students demonstrated curiosity as they explored the unique features and adaptations of Australia’s native animals.

Students were thrilled to hold a ring-tailed possum for the first time. They enjoyed watching a serpent reveal its beautiful rainbow colouring and laughed as the blue-tongued lizard greeted them with a few cheeky licks. The green tree frog prompted plenty of squeals, while students watched in amazement as the owl expertly flew back into its enclosure.

Throughout the incursion, students demonstrated the School Values of Respect, Kindness and Discipline by listening attentively, following instructions carefully and treating both the animals and Josh, our presenter, with care. They also displayed Wisdom and Knowledge by asking thoughtful questions, deepening their understanding and building the foundation for writing detailed, factual and engaging information reports.

Year 1 ICT Program

This term in ICT, our Year 1 students are becoming confident digital creators as they explore Google Slides. They are creating an “All About Me” presentation, learning how to add text, insert images and use slide transitions to make their work engaging for an audience.

Along the way, students are developing their digital technology skills while building confidence in presenting information creatively. We can’t wait to see the wonderful presentations they create and share this term!

Super Speak

Congratulations to Ayushman S on receiving the prestigious Super Speak Achievement Award!

We are delighted to recognise Ayushman for earning the Super Speak Achievement Award, a significant milestone that celebrates dedication, perseverance and excellence in communication.

The award is presented by Super Speak, one of Melbourne’s leading public speaking and communication programs for young people. The Super Speak Achievement Award recognises students who have completed approximately 2.5 years of public speaking and communication skills training, representing around 100 hours of learning and practice, and who have successfully delivered numerous formal solo speeches. This achievement demonstrates a sustained commitment to developing confidence, communication skills and effective public speaking.

Ayushman’s achievement reflects not only the completion of a rigorous program but also a willingness to step outside his comfort zone, speak in front of audiences and continually refine his communication skills. Reaching this milestone requires persistence, commitment and a strong work ethic over an extended period.

This award is a testament to Ayushman’s growth as a confident speaker and communicator. His accomplishment serves as an excellent example of how dedication and consistent effort can lead to outstanding results.

We congratulate Ayushman on this wonderful achievement and look forward to seeing him continue to develop his talents and make the most of the opportunities that strong communication skills can provide.

BTA Acro Regionals

Congratulations to Saanvi P (5A) on an outstanding performance at the BTA Acro Regionals Competition, held at the National Institute of Circus Arts on Sunday 5 July.

The BTA Acro Regionals brings together some of Victoria’s strongest acrobatic gymnasts, with athletes competing for the opportunity to qualify for the Australian National Championships.

Saanvi performed exceptionally well, earning 2nd place in Victoria and securing her place at the 2027 Australian National Championships, to be held on the Sunshine Coast this January.

Congratulations to Saanvi on this fantastic achievement. We wish her all the very best as she prepares to represent Victoria at the national level.

Subjects & Careers Expo 2026

Our annual Subjects & Careers Expos are just around the corner, giving Year 8–12 students and their families the opportunity to explore senior subject selections, further study, training and a wide range of career pathways.
The Expos will be held from 4.00pm to 7.00pm on:

Across the evening, students and families will have the chance to meet representatives from universities, TAFEs, employers and industry organisations, hear from BMG alumni about their experiences, and speak with teaching staff about senior subject selections and future opportunities.

A range of seminars will also be available, covering different study and career pathways, along with information sessions for students entering Year 9 or Year 11 in 2027.

Families are encouraged to review the program before attending and register for any seminars they would like to join. Places are limited, and sessions with low registrations may not proceed, so early registration is recommended.

STEM Showcase Evening 2026

BMG is excited to announce the annual STEM Showcase evening is returning this September. Year 3 to 12 students from both campuses will have the opportunity to participate in solving a STEM Problem and have their work critiqued by teachers and STEM Professionals in the community. A focus of this year’s STEM night is Seeds of Science Nurturing Knowledge for All. During the STEM Showcase evening we will have a number of rooms open that will have activities for students to participate and get involved in.

How to sign-up to be part of the STEM Showcase Evening: 

Students from Years 5 – 12 will be able to sign-up via survey that will be advertised through Schoolbox at the STEM@BMG page. Sign-up will close on Friday 7 August.

This year students in Years 3 & 4 will have the opportunity to sign-up for a Design Challenge. Please see STEM@BMG Page or check Schoolbox News for more details. Parents can use the sign-up link to sign their child up for this competition.

TEAM Challenges: There will be some team challenges that students can sign-up for closer to the date. These will include design and problem solving components. Stay Tuned.

Students Reach for the Stars at RMIT Space Academy

During the school holidays, six of our talented students had the exciting opportunity to participate in the RMIT Space Academy Holiday Program, an immersive STEM experience designed to inspire the next generation of space explorers, scientists and engineers.

We were thrilled to have Reyan H, Juliet C, Max F and Omika K join 32 selected “young space adventurers” to form RMIT mission teams. Throughout the program, students used RMIT’s cutting-edge virtual reality technology and completed hands-on challenges including designing spacecraft and planetary habitats, exploring orbital mechanics, navigating missions to distant exoplanets, and managing resources to sustain life on new worlds.

Participants also gained valuable insights through virtual lectures and training sessions with real astronauts, engineers and scientists, providing a glimpse into the exciting future of space exploration.

We were also proud to have Samarjot S.A and Aadi M take part as Student Mentors, sharing their knowledge and supporting fellow participants throughout the academy.

Congratulations to all six students on this incredible achievement. We are proud of the curiosity, leadership and passion for STEM they demonstrated while representing our school.

ICCES Winter Tour

The ICCES Winter Tour is, quite rightly, the biggest sporting event on the school calendar and something that both staff and students eagerly anticipate each year when the new dates are announced.

This year’s annual trip to Shepparton will go down as one to remember – not only because it was the largest group of students BMG has ever taken on tour, but also because of the outstanding performances from our individual teams and the school’s overall success.

Basketball

After completing a clean sweep of the Basketball divisions in 2025, the pressure was certainly on our students to perform again this year.

While we were unable to repeat last year’s clean sweep, our Basketball program once again demonstrated its strength by winning 3 of the 4 divisions:

• 1st – Junior Girls
• 1st – Senior Boys
• 1st – Senior Girls

A special mention must go to our Junior Girls who finished runners-up at the VSSC Championships earlier in the same week before backing up to claim the ICCES title – a remarkable achievement.

Football

In previous years, BMG has struggled to find consistent success on the football pitches in Shepparton. With 5 of the 13 divisions on offer, significant time and effort was invested this year to give our students the best possible opportunity to succeed.

By the conclusion of the tournament, BMG had been competitive across all 5 divisions, with students showing tremendous resilience while battling both quality opposition and the challenging Shepparton weather. Their hard work was reflected in some excellent results:

• 1st – Junior Girls
• 3rd – Intermediate Boys
• 3rd – Senior Girls

This marks the first time BMG has won the Junior Girls Football division – a fantastic achievement and a testament to the team’s hard work, dedication and performances throughout the tournament.

Hockey

Hockey continues to grow in popularity at the ICCES Winter Tour, with this year featuring the largest number of participating schools across any of the 13 divisions. This resulted in a demanding schedule for our students, with quick turnarounds between matches.

Despite these challenges, our Hockey team produced some excellent performances throughout the tournament, earning a well-deserved podium finish:

• 3rd – Open Mixed

Netball

Netball is always one of the most fiercely contested sports, with every match proving highly competitive. This year was no exception, with our teams displaying outstanding determination, teamwork and resilience throughout the tournament.

At the conclusion of play, BMG claimed 1 of the 3 available division titles:

• 1st – Senior Girls

This is also the first time BMG has won the Senior Girls Netball division at the ICCES Winter Tour.

After two tiring, wet, but thoroughly enjoyable days of competition, BMG returned home having won 5 division championships, placing the school in a strong position to challenge for the overall title.

It is with great pride that we announce BMG finished with 51 points, 3 points clear of our nearest rival, to be crowned 2026 ICCES Winter Tour Champions for the 5th time in the school’s history.

I would firstly like to personally thank every student who represented BMG across the two days. You consistently displayed our school values through your respect, leadership, confidence and ambition. This achievement is a direct reflection of your commitment and efforts.

Secondly, a heartfelt thank you goes to all our coaches for the countless hours they devoted throughout Terms 1 and 2 to trialling, training and preparing our students. Your commitment laid the foundation for this outstanding success.

I would also like to acknowledge Mr A. Perks and Mr C. Perks for their logistical support throughout the tour, along with Nurse Jo, Ms Majewski and Mr Panczel for their invaluable assistance and care across the 2 days.

Sport at BMG continues to go from strength to strength, and we look forward to building on this success as preparations now begin for the ICCES Summer Tour.

BMPSSA Winter Sports Day

A total of 145 Year 5 and 6 students proudly represented at the annual BMPSSA Winter Sports Day held across Bacchus Marsh in Week 8 of Term 2. Throughout the day, students competed in AFL, Football, Hockey, Netball and Tee Ball, displaying outstanding skill, teamwork and sportsmanship. It was fantastic to see so many students embrace the opportunity to represent the school with pride while enjoying a great day of interschool sport.

AFL

Our AFL teams enjoyed an outstanding day, with both the Mixed Boys A and Mixed Boys B teams winning their respective divisions.

Football

Football was another major success, with the Mixed A, Mixed B, and Girls teams all crowned champions in their respective divisions.

We would like to extend our appreciation to the three Year 9 Elite Sport students who generously gave up their time to assist with refereeing throughout the competition.

Hockey

Both our Girls and Mixed hockey teams claimed victory in their respective divisions after excellent performances across the day.

Netball

Our Girls netball team produced a terrific display to win their division.

Tee Ball

Our Mixed Tee Ball team also enjoyed a successful day, winning their division with a series of impressive performances.

At the conclusion of the day, BMG claimed an outstanding 9 Division Championships from the 11 divisions contested, a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work, commitment and improvement shown by both students and staff throughout the House Sport program during Term 2.

Congratulations to all students who represented the school with pride and enthusiasm. A special congratulations to those teams that have qualified for, or have already competed in, the Western Ranges Division Finals.

A sincere thank you to all staff involved for their coaching and dedication throughout the term, preparing the students so well for competition.

We wish all qualifying teams every success as they continue their representative journey and thank all staff, coaches and students for contributing to another memorable and highly successful BMPSSA Winter Sports Day.

Raising BodyKind Teens

The Butterfly Foundation is the national charity in Australia supporting those who have been impacted directly by eating disorders and body image issues, as well as the families, friends and communities who support them.
This organisation provides a range of evidence-base support services, treatment and resources and this includes a free live webinar for parents and carers of teens as part of the foundation’s BodyKind August initiative.

This is a practical session designed to help parents and caregivers understand body image influences during adolescence and build confidence in how to support their teen’s body image during this time.
The session explores the impact of puberty, comparisons, social media and online environments and everyday language and behaviours, while providing BodyKind strategies for the home.

Late bus reminders:

• Students are required to sign themselves up for the relevant late bus by adding their name under the stop where they will disembark. Sign-up must be completed before 1.30pm on the day of travel.
• Students who have not signed up by 1.30pm will not be permitted to travel on the late bus. Parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child from the School at 4.20pm. Students are expected to attend their scheduled after-school class or activity.
• Any student presenting at the bus quay after their after-school activity without being allocated to the late bus will not be permitted to board. The student will be taken to the Main Office and parents contacted for collection.
• Late bus sign-up sheets are located in the Main Administration Office.
• The late bus fee is $15.00 per child, per trip, and will be charged to family school fee accounts at the end of each term.

Private Bus Travel 2027

We are currently rolling over students from 2026 private bus travel to 2027 private bus travel.
If your child/ren’s current bus travel arrangements are going to change or require to be changed (eg moving house, will not require private bus travel) for 2027, please contact the School Bus Services Administrator on 5366 4800 or email bus@bmg.vic.edu.au to discuss. If your child/ren will not require a private bus service in 2027 and parents do not advise us by the end of Term 2, your child/ren will be allocated to a private bus and 2027 bus fees will apply.

If you have changed your child/ren’s stop where they board or disembark as a permanent change, and have not notified the school, please contact the School Bus Services Administrator on 5366 4800 or email bus@bmg.vic.edu.au. This information needs to be up to date on roll call for emergency services and will assist in the planning for 2027 stops/ routes/timetables.

ICAS – Years 2 to 10 closes Monday 27 July

Information relating to 2026 ICAS Assessments was been sent to families via EdSmart (10/6/2026). This competition is open to students in Years 2 to 10. Please note that participation is optional.

Refer to the full details on Schoolbox.

Registrations for all subject areas close on Monday 27 July at 11:59pm.

Assessments will be conducted during school hours within the sitting dates above, at times determined by the Heads of Campus and Class Teachers. Due to the volume of students participating and coordinating the assessments within the school’s existing timetable, there will be no opportunity to provide parents with advance notice of the exact sitting date / time for their child.

Conveyance Allowance

The Conveyance Allowance is a contribution towards transport costs and is not intended to cover the full cost of transporting children to and from school.

The Conveyance Allowance may be available to students attending government or non-government schools:

• travelling by private car, motorbike, bicycle, or bus, and
• whose nearest school is not serviced by a free school bus provided under the School Bus Program or a free Victorian public transport service.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Students must reside 4.8km or more from their nearest school/campus they attend.

2. Students must be of school age and reside in Victoria

3. Students must be enrolled in a school for 3 or more days per week.

A student who meets the above requirements may be eligible if they:

• attend their nearest or designated neighbourhood government school/campus appropriate to their year level, at which admission is permissible, or
• attend their nearest appropriate non-government school/campus appropriate to their year level, at which admission is permissible, and
• reside 4.8km or more by the shortest practicable route from the campus attended.

Please note that a Conveyance Allowance is not available where a free bus service is available. From 1 January 2026, people aged under 18 will be able to travel for free on all Victorian public transport services.

Eligibility will be assessed when the school completes your child’s application on the Student Conveyance Allowance System (SCAS). If approved, the allowance payable is based on the one-way distance to make the journey to and from school.

Please note that if BMG is not your nearest school but your decision to send your children to BMG was because you felt that it was the nearest appropriate school that both respected ecumenical values but did not require your child to participate in religious instruction or religious celebration; then you may be eligible for the Conveyance Allowance (subject to other Conveyance Allowance rules), however your application must include a signed supporting letter outlining the reasons above for your decision to send your child to Bacchus Marsh Grammar.

If you already have a Conveyance Allowance application in place and your circumstances have not changed (method of transport to and from school or home address) you will not be required to submit a new application, and your previously approved applications will automatically roll over. Please note that current applications for public transport will not roll over to 2026 as per the above changes. If you have additional children starting at the school and would like to apply for the Conveyance Allowance for them, you will need to submit a new application.

If you have not applied for a Conveyance previously and would like to apply for the allowance in 2026, please obtain an application form from the Schools website www.bmg.vic.edu.au – Admissions – Transport and Bus Network.

New applications can be submitted throughout the school year, however, must be submitted to the school by no later than Friday 30 October 2026 otherwise parents/guardians risk their claim not being accepted. Please refer to the 2026 Business Notice for further information.
