FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Read Time: ( words)

It has been a very busy and productive term, filled with many activities and achievements across all sub-schools. It has been fabulous to see our students actively engaging in so many aspects of school life, whether through House events, musical performances, sporting competitions, or other co-curricular pursuits. Their enthusiasm, teamwork, and dedication have been commendable, and these experiences continue to enrich their learning beyond the classroom.
Equally pleasing has been the strong presence and support of our parent community at these events. Whether cheering on from the sidelines, applauding at concerts, or attending exhibitions, your involvement plays a vital role in fostering a vibrant and connected school culture. Your presence not only encourages your children but also strengthens the sense of community that is so integral to our school. We warmly invite you to continue attending events and engaging with the school, as these shared experiences are an essential part of your child’s educational journey.

Supporting our Students during Examinations and Assessments

Over the next 10 days, students in both Middle and Senior School will be involved in various assessments including tests and examinations.

It is natural for students to feel the pressure that these assessments bring. Students will feel challenged by the material they are being assessed on and may even feel uncomfortable about the challenges that lay ahead. However, this is completely normal.

Staff members have prepared students well at school with revision exercises, study time and reflective support, and students should feel confident in their own abilities.

As parents, you can play an important role in helping your child navigate this busy time with confidence, grit and resilience.

Here are a few simple yet effective ways you can support your child at home:

Create a Calm Study Space
Help your child set up a quiet, comfortable area that’s free from distractions. Make sure their mobile phone is in another room and turned off during their study time.

Encourage Routine and Balance
Work with your child to establish a realistic study schedule that includes regular breaks, rest and focused revision time. Consistent study habits are far more effective than last-minute cramming.

Promote Healthy Habits
Nutrition, sleep, and physical activity all play key roles in brain function and emotional health. Encourage healthy meals, early night and some fresh air or exercise during study breaks.

Be Positive and Supportive
Try to reduce pressure by focusing on effort, not just results. A few encouraging words and calm reassurance can go a long way in helping your child feel supported.

Offer Help, Respect Independence
Let your child know you’re there if they need help reviewing or organising their time but also give them space to take ownership of their learning.

Stay Connected
Familiarise yourself with the school’s exam timetable and key dates. This will help you offer gentle reminders and ensure your child is well-prepared and punctual.
Exams can be challenging, but with the right support at home and school, students can develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of achievement.

Punctuality and Safety Reminder

We kindly remind all families of the importance of arriving at school on time each morning. A prompt start to the day helps set students up for success, ensuring they are calm, prepared and ready for learning when classes begin. Leaving promptly at the end of the school day is equally important. It helps maintain a calm and orderly environment during pick-up times and ensures that all students are safely collected under supervision.
We also ask for your support in reinforcing an important safety message with your child. For the safety of all students and families, ball games are not permitted before or after school at any of the following locations:
• Basketball courts
• Downball courts
• Grammar Green
• Quadrangle area (Woodlea Campus)
With the high volume of pedestrian traffic during drop-off and pick-up, we need to maintain a safe and calm environment for everyone.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping us prioritise student safety and punctuality each day.

Year 3 Ballarat Wildlife Excursion

On Friday 6 June, the Year 3 students visited the Ballarat Wildlife Park. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to apply their knowledge from the Classification of Animals unit in a real-world setting. As they observed a variety of animals up close, the students identified key features and discussed how these characteristics help classify animals into groups such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish. The students enjoyed being taxonomists for the day, recording their observations on worksheets and consolidating their learning through hands-on experience.
Throughout the day, students encountered a diverse array of native animals, including koalas, wombats, emus, dingoes and of course, many kangaroos. They also observed the park’s impressive collection of reptiles such as crocodiles, snakes, and lizards, housed within the Reptile House. Students listened attentively to presentations led by knowledgeable keepers. These sessions provided in-depth insights into the behaviours and habitats of various species including meerkats and penguins. The tiger enclosure was the most popular non-Australian exhibit at the park, and the students were amazed by its size and striking colouring as it prowled around its enclosure.
The highlight of the day for all was the opportunity to interact closely with the park’s many kangaroos. Students thoroughly enjoyed the chance to hand-feed and pat these iconic animals. There were so many kangaroos that some students ran out of space on their worksheets to record them all. Although the weather at Ballarat Wildlife Park was cold and windy, the rain held off until it was time to leave. The excursion provided students with a memorable experience and a real-world setting in which to demonstrate their knowledge.

Prep Students Visit the Local Wetlands

Our Prep students have been busy learning about our local area as part of their Global Studies unit. They have discovered what makes our region special, looked at different landmarks, and talked about how we can look after our environment and the plants and animals that live here.
Recently, we extended this learning with an educational excursion to the wetlands adjacent to our campus. Despite the cool weather, our Prep students approached the experience with enthusiasm, equipped with clipboards and pencils to document their observations.
During the excursion, students identified both natural and man-made landmarks while searching for local flora. The highlight came when students encountered a mob of kangaroos resting beside the wetlands, providing an authentic opportunity to observe the local fauna they had been studying.
The students thoroughly enjoyed experiencing their classroom learning in a real-world setting, reinforcing the importance of caring for our environment and their connection to the local area.

Year 3 Science

Our Year 3 students have been on an exciting learning journey exploring Earth’s natural resources. Over the past weeks, our students have been discovering the world of soil, rocks and minerals, and investigating how their characteristics vary depending on where they’re found in the environment.
Outside the classroom, students looked around our school grounds to spot how we use natural resources every day. In class, our Year 3 scientists have been hands-on with samples of rocks, soil and minerals. They’ve conducted experiments, tested their characteristics, made predictions and carefully recorded their observations. It’s been an engaging and insightful experience for them; many students even brought in samples from their own collections to share.
This fun and engaging unit has deepened our students’ understanding of Earth’s resources and increased their appreciation of the environment and the importance of responsible resource management. Great job, Year 3 Geologists!

Year 5 Science at Staughton Vale Newsletter

This week Year 5 Maddingley students visited the Staughton Vale Campus as a part of their science studies. They looked at the different landforms visible in the distance from the Campus and investigated how these were formed over time through volcanic activity, weathering and erosion.
Students rotated through three key activities across the day:
Water and Erosion Modelling Using Stream Tables
Students explored how water moves across land and contributes to erosion. They used different stream flows, looking at the effect on modelled landscapes. It simulated erosion over time and helped students develop a deeper understanding of how natural processes affect the environment.
Geology of Anakie Gorge
A walk through Anakie Gorge showed students distinct sedimentary rock layers and they learned how wind and water shaped the region over millions of years.
Western Volcanic Plains Exploration
On a walk to the Observation Deck at Staughton Vale, students viewed the natural landforms of the Western Volcanic Plains. They completed labelled scientific drawings to document and reflect on the geological features and landforms observed.
Students enjoyed a great day outdoors, applying their classroom learning to a real-world environment.

Final Middle School Assembly of Term 2

Middle School recently held its final assembly of the term, bringing the school community together to celebrate student achievements and reflect on a successful semester. A key part of the event was the presentation of awards for sporting excellence, recognising students who had shown outstanding performance, dedication and sportsmanship across various athletic events.
In addition, a group of students received School Colours Awards, an honour given to those who had actively participated in a wide range of school activities. This award acknowledged their enthusiasm and consistent involvement in representing the school.

Harry H received a Principal Award for his continued excellence in BMX which recently saw him placed 3rd in Australia and New Zealand.
Read Harry’s reflection:

The AusCycling BMX Mighty 11’s International Event (Aus vs NZ)
The Mighty Elevens event is an International race between Australia and New Zealand that happens two times every year, which began in 1995. There are ten riders from each country, five girls and five boys. For this event they pick the fastest 11 year olds in the country, with the number 1 rider being the captain and the No. 5 rider being the reserve.
May 2025 – Held at Lake Macquarie in Newcastle NSW
The riders arrived at the location 3 days earlier to begin training at the track. This year, due to the bad weather in Newcastle, we did not ride the track until racing on Saturday. Instead. we trained at some nearby tracks that weren’t waterlogged!
When we weren’t training for team building and getting to know each other better, we got to go ten-pin bowling and go to Timezone, along with some team dinners. At the main dinner event, each team of riders was presented with their country jerseys in which to race in.
Racing Weekend
The event kicked off with an opening ceremony, with national anthems and the New Zealand riders also performed the Haka to kick start the racing. We rode 14 races over the weekend, including a special memorial class in which other riders could race against the Aus and NZ test team riders. My weekend started off a bit rocky with a big crash in my first race and I banged my heel hard, but I was able to keep going and in the 3rd race the Aussie boys finished in the first 4 positions. This year, the Australians won both the Mighty 11’s Girls and Boys event. This also meant that the Australians have won five of the last six Boys Test events in a row.
What will you remember about this event?
I will remember everything that we did on and off the track, new experiences, meeting new people, riding at new tracks, learning new skills and my first international event – very rewarding!

Inspire City Experience

As part of the Year 9/10 INSPIRE Program, students headed into Melbourne’s CBD to take on the Urban Quest, an action-packed challenge designed to get them thinking, problem-solving, and working together outside the classroom.
The day combined elements of an Amazing Race style scavenger hunt with real world problem solving. Using smartphones, teams navigated through the city completing a series of clues and tasks that tested their communication, leadership, and teamwork.
Their quest started and finished at the State Library and while the challenge was tough, most teams did manage to complete the full Quest within the 90 minutes allocated, with a Year 10 team from Woodlea completing in 1 hour and 9 minutes, placing them 25th on the overall leaderboard.
The aim of the day was for students to immerse them in something practical, hands-on, and memorable. Whether it was navigating unfamiliar streets, solving puzzles under pressure, or just learning to work better as a team, students walked away with more than just tired legs and hopefully some improved navigation skills within the CBD.
Congratulations to the winning teams, and well done to all involved for representing the school so well. We hope for the students to experience another city venture as a part of their INSPIRE program later in the year.

VCE Geography Fieldwork at Woodlea: Exploring Land Use Change on Melbourne’s Expanding Fringe

On Tuesday 27 May, our VCE Unit 3 Geography class ventured out to the Woodlea Housing Estate in Aintree for a full-day fieldwork excursion as part of their investigation into land use change. The day, led by VCE Geography Teacher Ms. Higgins, focused on the rapid transformation occurring across Melbourne’s western growth corridor.
Woodlea provided an ideal case study, offering students a real-world look at how formerly rural areas are being reimagined as master-planned communities. Equipped with clipboards, maps and data collection tools, students gathered a wide range of primary data throughout the day, including field sketches, photographs, observational checklists, land use surveys and community perception data. This hands-on research will form the backbone of their major fieldwork report and support their responses in the VCAA examination.
A highlight of the day was the opportunity to hear from Matt Darvell, Senior Development Manager at Woodlea, who generously spoke to the students about the planning, vision and strategic decision-making behind the development. His insights helped students better understand the role of developers and planning authorities in shaping communities that are both sustainable and liveable.
Students were particularly interested in how Woodlea balances growth with green spaces, transport infrastructure, community amenities and long-term environmental sustainability. The estate’s design prompted meaningful discussions about urban sprawl, population growth and the evolving nature of Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
It was fantastic to see students so engaged, asking thoughtful questions, working collaboratively and showing real curiosity about the landscape around them. Experiences like this make Geography so relatable and we look forward to seeing how students apply their fieldwork insights in the weeks ahead.

Year 10 Tertiary Experience Day – Deakin University & The Gordon TAFE

On Tuesday 3 June, our Maddingley Year 10 students participated in an engaging Tertiary Experience Day, hosted collaboratively by Deakin University and The Gordon TAFE. The event provided valuable insights into the key differences between university and TAFE pathways, supporting students as they begin to consider their future educational and career options.
Students attended two tailored workshops selected from a diverse range of offerings, including Philosophy (Arts), Engineering, Exercise & Sports Science, Library Studies, and campus tours. Each session offered students a real-world introduction to tertiary learning environments—ranging from lecture-style university teaching to hands-on vocational presentations at TAFE.
The experience prompted students to reflect on their personal interests and aspirations while deepening their understanding of the expectations, skills and learning structures typical of both higher education and vocational training. It was a timely and valuable experience, particularly as students prepare for subject selections next term.
A big thank you to James Pountney from Deakin University and Grace Bodie from The Gordon TAFE for coordinating and delivering a day that was both informative and inspiring.

Equestrian Club Excursion to Melbourne International Horse Trials

Last Friday, our Equestrian Club members had an absolutely fantastic day out at the prestigious Melbourne International Horse Trials held at Werribee Park. It was a brilliant opportunity for our riders and enthusiasts to witness top-level eventing firsthand and gain invaluable insights.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the exclusive cross-country course walk a five-star eventer, Sam Jeffree! Sam, a familiar face on the Australian eventing circuit, generously shared his knowledge and expertise, guiding our students around the challenging and intricate cross-country track. He explained the technicalities of various fences, discussed lines and approaches, and offered invaluable strategic advice – giving our students a true five-star perspective on what it takes to tackle such a demanding course.
Witnessing the sheer athleticism of the horses and riders, and understanding the precision required at this level, was incredibly inspiring for everyone. Our members left feeling motivated and with a deeper appreciation for the sport of eventing.
A huge thank you to Sam Jeffree for taking the time to share his expertise with us, and to the organisers of the Melbourne International Horse Trials for hosting such a spectacular event. It was a memorable day that will undoubtedly fuel the passion for equestrian sport within our club for a long time to come!

Mary Poppins Jr – Woodlea Production

What a show! Based on the timeless stories by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, the show follows the enchanting Mary Poppins as she brings her unique brand of wisdom, whimsy and wonder to the Banks family and to everyone lucky enough to watch her story unfold.
The musical showcased the incredible talent, energy and heart of our Woodlea students. The catchy tunes, clever choreography and bright performances ensured each scene was brought to life with creativity.
Thank you to our dedicated Production Team who poured countless hours into every detail from directing, choreography, vocal coaching, set construction and costume coordination to technical support and behind-the-scenes organisation. Your hard work and passion made this production a beautiful piece of theatre and created wonderful memories for the students involved.
To our families, thank you for the ongoing support and encouragement. From late-night rehearsals and costume prep to cheering in the audience, your involvement was key to creating such a special experience for our students.
Congratulations to everyone involved in Mary Poppins Jr. It truly was a practically perfect show, filled with joy, teamwork and memories.

Stay tuned for more photos on Schoolbox next week!

Music Week 2025

Between Monday 2 June and Friday 6 June we celebrated Music Week at BMG. Over the course of the week, more than 200 students performed in 30 concerts across five days at both campuses. This musical feast showcased our talented students from all year levels, playing a wide variety of instruments and exploring many different musical styles.
We held concerts dedicated to specific instruments including piano, voice, woodwind, brass, strings, guitars and percussion. Our VCE and VET Music students also performed solo concerts featuring their exam programs.
This year we introduced new performance spaces at both campuses. At Maddingley, the Hive hosted several lunchtime piano recitals and a special cello performance that complemented student activities in the library. At Woodlea, the Peng Building hosted its first music soiree, with the Year 9 and 10 Music students presenting their exam pieces.
The Performing Arts Department extends a heartfelt thank you to all parents, staff and students who supported the concerts and embraced this year’s theme: Playing for Others, Listening to Others.
Finally, I would like to thank all the staff who dedicated their time and energy to making Music Week such a memorable celebration. We are already looking forward to Music Week in 2026.

Showcase

On Thursday 5 June, students in Years 2 to 4 showcased their musical talents to a warm and supportive audience of parents in the gym. The Year 3 and 4 classes performed a vibrant collection of songs using a range of percussion instruments including marimbas, glockenspiels, xylophones and untuned percussion. Year 2 students presented delightful violin pieces, proudly demonstrating their growing skills. The Year 3 and 4 Choir gave a spirited performance of Roar by Katy Perry, and the Junior School rock band brought great energy to the afternoon. We were also treated to some impressive solo performances on piano and guitar. It was a wonderful addition to our Music Week celebrations.
