BMG 2019 Grammarian Issue 3

8 LITERACY WEEK Literacy Week has been an opportunity for our school to celebrate the contributions that books, Australian authors and illustrators make to our learning, and lives. At Bacchus Marsh Grammar, we are dedicated towards enriching all our student’s literacy learning through purposeful and engaging activities. This year, Literacy Week has enabled the students to take part in a range of exciting literacy experiences, which have complemented and expanded upon the range learning opportunities the students continue to have. The week began at both the Maddingley and Woodlea campuses with students across Prep to Year 4 participating in engaging literacy activities, rotating within their year levels. The students took part in activities such as: poetry writing; creating comics; Literacy Olympics, as well as many other exciting and purposeful activities. The annual Literacy Showcase was held and involved students listening to the Travelling Story, Oops...I Opened the Wrong Door! which was written by many classes across Prep to Year 12. Many different Literacy Awards were handed out at the Showcase to recognise the achievements made by our students. Students spoke of their favourite books and expressed how they had been inspired by the themes and messages within the texts. To end both showcases, the audiences were entertained by a Year 3 and 4 flashmob. Students performed parts of the classic Dr Seuss books, I am Sam, Fox in Socks and Horton Hatches an Egg . These performances were fantastic and paid tribute to the exciting and imaginative worlds that authors can take us all to. Congratulations to Kate Kelloway who designed the Literacy Week Mascot – Wordy Worm.
