BMG Grammarian Issue 1 - 2019

4 BMG 30TH ANNIVERSARY QUILT Midway through 2018, a small group of staff came together to share ideas and explore possibilities for the production of a quilt to celebrate BMG’s 30th year. Starting out with open minds and a range of skills and knowledge, the quilt evolved using various sewing, printing and embellishment techniques. Participants worked on the quilt individually and collectively after school hours. Time spent together at a weekend workshop allowed us all to remember and reflect on our respective journeys at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, share stories and food, laugh, and teach each other new textiles skills. The quilt was made with love and the desire to create something unique and long lasting. Contained within the quilt there are various symbols. Historically, quilts and tapestries often contained a ‘marker’ of the year in which the piece was created. Our ‘marker’ is represented by a cave (at the base of the tree) and buttons (13 in total) for the young boys and their coach trapped in a cave in Thailand, in June of 2018. We felt this remarkable rescue story embraced the symbolism of hopefulness, courage and community, three characteristics that were instrumental in the formation of our now thriving school. The colours chosen for the quilt are reflective of our local environment – ochre and red brown earth, greens for the rolling hills and blues for our ever changing skies. There are touches of other colours to reflect the changing seasons. Images of children exploring the Staughton Vale campus are featured. Behind the school logo is a plan view of the school as it was in 2018.
