The Year 10 curriculum at Bacchus Marsh Grammar prepares students for the VCE, whilst providing the ability to undertake a broad range of electives. In addition, each Year 10 student will take part in a careers program with the aim of assisting students to make appropriate subject selection at Year 11 and to develop a focus on future employment and personal development. Bacchus Marsh Grammar also provides an opportunity for appropriate Year 10 students to enhance their learning program by commencing their VCE program by doing a Unit 1 / 2 study in Year 10.
In Year 10 students study twelve semester length subjects and are involved in a compulsory physical activities program. Students get to choose all of the subjects (with the exception of English) that they will undertake. To ensure that students are properly prepared for study at Year 11 and 12, students must select a certain number of units from key curriculum areas. The minimum unit requirement in each core subject is listed below.
Subject Minimum requirements:
-
English - Two semester units
-
Mathematics - Two semester units
-
Science - One semester unit
-
SOSE - One semester unit
Students choose the rest of their course from any other available units. This enables students to either select a quite diverse Year 10 program, or to develop a concentration in a particular area that interests them. If a student selects a LOTE option or a VCE unit 1 / 2 studies they should note that this commits them to two semesters study in that particular subject.
Student demand, the availability of teaching staff, resources and the requirements of timetabling determine the final make up of each student’s program. In this way the processes of Year 10 mirrors that of Year 11 and 12. Some of the subjects on offer have prerequisite or hurdle requirements, whilst others are only available to students after a process of counselling.
Some students may wish to consider commencing their formal VCE studies in Year 10. The BMG VCE Acceleration Policy sets out the schools’ requirements to be allowed to do so. In general a student must achieve academic grades of B+ or higher in most core subjects at Year 9 as well as criteria grades of Very Good or above in organisation and attitude criteria marks for both semester reports. Students are not penalised in any way if they choose not to commence their VCE studies in Year 10. Students may only choose one VCE study as part of their Year 10 program.
In selecting a course of study students will be provided with selection advice by teachers, however, in general terms students should select subjects on the basis of interest, possible future VCE studies and aptitude.
